ORIGINAL: PeonForHer I'm jealous. Legal disputes seem to be so much more fun your side of the pond. Approximate number of people in America: 307,000,000 Number of whom are lawyers: “According to the American Bar Association, there were ... resident and active attorneys in the United States ... 1,143,358 in 2007” This means there’s a lawyer for every 269 persons; man, woman and child (!). And for the UK? Just under 62,000,000 people, of whom 128,695 are lawyers (112,240 solicitors* and 16,455 barristers) so that makes just over 1 lawyer per 483 people. I think we may have unwittingly stumbled across why those numbers are so different :) I do recall reading once that 20% of California’s entire permanent workforce are employed in some capacity within the legal profession, but the percentage seemed a tad too high - even for California. *A couple of censuses ago there was a vast jump in the number of solicitors. This puzzled the hell out the statisticians until some bright spark realised loads of prostitutes were putting themselves down as “solicitors” :)
