Try reading the ingredients list on the package.  There should be a section that says "Active Ingredient(s)".  That's what they don't like.

I don't currently have a can of bug spray handy, to be reading the back of the can* wish I did, then the fuckers wouldn't be bombarding me 7  or so every few minutes to bite me, and get me when I am asleep and cannot wave them away.*

That still don't tell me why they don't like it. unless it's just a way the chemical smells to them or something.

depending on the ingredient, it's either something they don't like because of the smell or taste or it's poisonous to them.

What I wouldn't give for a giant bubble they can't penetrate while I sleep hehehe. Or for them to go away and not inhabit this property, they can go bug my neighbor.

Mosquitoes can target a person from as far as 100 yards way. They hone in on 3 key items. Body heat, carbon dioxide you exhale and some chemicals produced and excreted by the skin. One major chemical being lactic acid.

DEET is one of the most effective, human safe, chemicals for repelling those buggers, but there are others. Deet when applied to the skin will turn into a vapor due to the body heat. That vapor shuts down the lactic acid recptors on the female mesquitoe and makes you invisible to the female mesquitoe (FYI, only the female bites you).

Deet concentration in repellant products vary from a few % to 100%. The more Deet, the longer it will repel.

You could try buying a mesquitoe sleeping net. They are very common in tropical regions.

That DEET is a life saver. Mosquitoes eat me alive for some reason. Day, night, indoors or out, they will find me. I'm wearing it right now.

Deet is banned here., but not in the US.

It's some pretty bad shit. I won't touch it. I have a distinct aversion to smearing my skin with substances that dissolve my clothing.

Bugs never bug me, never have...skitters, blackflies, none. (well, except Bees--but I did sit on one as a kid and now the drones are in payback-mode) lol

I think skitters are afraid of me.  Maybe it's the Canadian beer.  Yep, likely I invented the cure, NO Deet peeps, more beer!!

Although, beer does have a tendency to dissolve my clothing ;)
just sayin'

I hesitate to spray off on me because all the cans say avoid prolonged exposure, and I worry aboutcasual at home indoor use.Mummyman that would help for sleeping but not when I'm out of the bed at pc anstuff.

Heya, Toppingfrmbottom.

I don't use sprays unless it's on my clothing only and I am out fishing.  In the fishing area of large stores, there are little ultrasonic devices (two of mine attach to a keychain if I wish) that are supposed to repel bugs.  I have them but cannot remember when I last used them.  I burn a citronella candle when we are playing Pokemon on our DS game players in the front yard.  It takes about ten minutes for the mosquitoes to go away.  One year I was lucky and found citronella insence (sp?) sticks, marketed for keeping mosquitoes away...it worked very well.

I lived in an apartment building that had no screens.  If I put in screens, they blew out so I gave up.  The window I left open except for bitter cold winter weather was the bathroom one that opened out onto the balcony...I plugged into the wall one of those ultrasonic pest repellers.  It was supposed to repel mice, rats, and mosquitoes.  Mice were never a problem, as I had cats living with me, lol.  I cannot remember mosquito bites being a problem.

What puzzles me is why they don't sell anti-static dryer sheets that are impregnated with citronella.  It would be convenient.

Also, Skin So Soft by Avon repels mosquitoes.

I still remember that disgusting feel of having myself sprayed from head to toe while I squenched my eyes shut, when I was out in the countryside with my dad.  Blech.
