I'd like to see Bernard Sanders run for president. He's got balls and tells it like it is. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to raise enough campaign funds. He cares too much about the American poor and middle class to kiss corporate ass to get those funds.

I think there is much more media hype about inflation rather than real inflation, and corporations are taking advantage of the hype to raise prices and pad their pockets.

That chart is based off of the CPI accumulated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You don't need to go anywhere but there to see CPI information.

However, the CPI is a seriously manipulated statistic and, in general, tends to significantly understate actual inflation.

Hi Marini
Good to see you back! I'm playing hooky for a few- so I'll throw my $0.03 (inflation) in. I didn't watch the speech- I listened to it as I was busy reformatting references.

Overall- shy on specifics and funding. Not much there to be taken all that seriously I'm afraid. Yes, he's saying he's pushing education and clean tech. Show me the money- although there was a tweak in educational loans which are a disaster these days. In clean tech- calling for 1 million electric cars on the road by 2015- not much of a goal. Had he said we're going to be converting the federal mail truck fleet over-that would have been noteworthy- and a good idea if there were $$$ behind it. The difference between the Apollo program and clean tech is that Apollo had money- and clean tech doesn't. Serious clean tech proposals begin with a T in terms of dollars.

High speed rail- sorry- it's a sick joke. We don't have the population density of Europe or Japan where this can make sense. Who needs to go to Iowa in a hurry anyway? Given the population flocking to the coasts and leaving the Midwest empty, it's silly to build rail lines to nowhere- Japan found that out in a hurry.
Hi sam!
I have not heard anyone suggesting high speed rail at THIS time in Iowa, or the MidWest.
Where on earth did THAT come from?

I would think {and I am not an urban planner nor an engineer} that a high speed rail on the East Coast {Maine to Florida} and the West Coast {Washington State to Arizona or so} would be very profitable and as you suggested THAT is where the population, tourism, government, and many businesses tend to flock.
Again, I am not an engineer so I will let them work out the details and hope they would not plan or build a high speed rail that no one uses or needs.

Given the Republican talking imbecile after the speech I saw on MSNBC blathering on about how the deficit was both parties responsibility (I gave up after that.) maybe the gross distortions of the Republican owned media are getting hard for a lot of people to swallow.

I agree how quickly many think we forget the last 8 years of GWB, and the economic nightmare recession/depression, 2 wars, etc. that President Obama INHERITED.

Obama's approval ratings are climbing- given the Republican crazies alternative- Obama may start looking pretty good to the center. Maybe he can pull out a second term.

I am a moderate and I will vote for whomever I feel the best candidate for the job is.
I never cared for George W. Bush, and I am being kind.
IF that man could be President for 2 years, as useless and horrible of a President as he was, than damn skippy, President Obama can be President for two terms.

At this time, I don't see any contender that would cause me to consider voting for them instead of President Obama.
IF such a candidate appears, I will certainly vote for them instead.

I will take 4 more years of President Obama, than another form of GWB in principal, practice, or mindset, any day!
The Republicans talk a lot of shit, but they don't have any viable answers or real solutions, just talk.
Peace!

samboct -> RE: State of the Union (1/26/2011 2:35:27 PM)

Hi Marini

Missed you....

Anyhow- in terms of high speed rail- let's look at the political realities. Given that the blockheads are largely from the Midwest, if they don't get high speed rail to their state- what's in it for them? The good of the country? Pardon me while I pick myself up off the floor....The coasts are mostly democratic already. So the rail that exists is in the democratic part of the country- along with most of the humans.

The technology is certainly available but it does require a lot of up front capital and we've got a right of way issue. High speed rail needs straight runs with limited curves. In the Northeast- at least on the Stamford to NYC run- the track is too bendy. This would mean using land- often highway or houses next to the train for the track. Minor problem there.

Further south- like from DC to Richmond- people built houses right up to the track. Well, if there's high speed rail, you need a good buffer zone to stop stuff from getting sucked onto the train from the vacuum created by its passage. Where's the buffer zone going to come from?

All you have to do is look at the Acela-which is supposedly a nice train, but doesn't save you much time over the normal Spamtrak Silver Meteor or whatever the hell it's called. (I took the train from Stamford to Richmond, VA a bunch of times when I was dating someone who lived down there.) It's nicer than driving, but it's not necessarily much faster- especially when they do the engine change over in DC which NEVER was done in the allotted time. The Northeast doesn't like diesels- so they use an electric locomotive- which can actually get cranking pretty good between DC and Philly- I'd guess it's pushing 80-90 mph- definitely faster than the cars on the highway, but down south, it's pretty pokey.

Sam

Marini -> RE: State of the Union (1/26/2011 2:47:17 PM)

hi sam,

It's nice to be missed, thank you.

I see your point, and with the state of the economy, maybe this high speed rail idea is grasping at straws.

At least President Obama, is trying and states he is willing to entertain any and all viable idea's to help this country.

I for one, would like to hear MANY idea's on how to make this country a better place, instead of the endless criticisms without REAL viable solutions.

popeye1250 -> RE: State of the Union (1/26/2011 8:51:12 PM)

I didn't watch it but I've been catching blurbs all day.
Question, where are all those "millions of jobs" that he mentioned? Is he telling us that MayTag, IBM, Coca Cola, and a hundred other corps are going to start hiring in Feb?
Oh, and for all the "Earmarks" that he wants to get rid of, someone please tell me that the cameras panned down on Whorehouse Harry Reid's and Nancy Pelosi's faces when he said that! lol

ETA: Relieved you were joking!!!!

I seemed to have found a squicky place for some of you with that hypothetical ticket. Cool! [:D]

tazzygirl -> RE: State of the Union (1/26/2011 9:50:36 PM)

Gingrich doesnt stand a chance. Not only did he piss off the religous section.. he pissed off the cancer section of the US. Will be interesting to watch him squirm out of that one.

TheHeretic -> RE: State of the Union (1/26/2011 10:04:18 PM)

Tazzy, it was an example of just how vulnerable President Obama could be in '12, if the conditions are wrong.

If I wanted a hypothetical ticket with a more realistic shot, I'd have said, Huntsman/Christie

thats why I always looked at the m1 curve because that is harder to manipulate without "outright" falsifying data.

Even at that they converted it to a ratio to make it look like its going down.

I saw that chart that is this chart:

[image]http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o296/nine_one_one/blacks/m1moneymultiplier2.jpg[/image]

back when it looked like this.

I took note also how no one ever talks about root issues with that regard lending mountains of credence to George Carlin when he says americans will remain "WILLFULLY" ignorant of that red white and blue dick thats being jammed up their assholes every day.

The biggest problem with this country is the people who willfully ignore the biggest problems with this country.  They actually let them vote.

o'dumbo... massive wild spending of money he has to beg the chinese for... he now calls "investments." Some will be fooled by this. High speed rail... a massive subsidy and huge cost overruns to benefit... ta da! his union boss cronies. IT'S MAKE WORK for something we don't need and nobody asked for, kinda like obamacare. The good news is the adults are in charge of all spending bills in the House. Now the idiots can go back to hate speech on George W. Bush. It's what they are best at. Just become unglued on conservatives, call them every name in the book, then accuse the tea party of hate. Hilarious. Repeat after me, "barack hussein obama, mmmm mmmm mmmm!"

Well, if you're going to raise the subject of the chimp, how was your country not badly in hock to the Chinese when idiot boy took power, and how did he not worsen the situation by trying to fund his adventure in Iraq with foreign loans rather than through the Congress who are supposed to budget that stuff?
You know, if this is something that's only been a problem since the Kenyan was elected...

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: State of the Union (1/27/2011 4:51:15 AM)

I wanted to share something I just read, Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961).
quote:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." President Dwight D. Eisenhower, l952-----

Wow, you only have 15 posts under your belt and I already see your screen name and immediately think "bigot"

That must be some kind of new record.

You say prostitute like it's a bad thing.   We slip them dollars, arms, intelligence, dreams, they slip us something we want.   The way it's always been.   Unfortunate you're just learning this.
Your hate of Obama is your problem though, and I didn't reply to you above on purpose.     M

Real0ne -> RE: State of the Union (1/27/2011 5:05:03 AM)

from the research I have done a close examination of literally every prazz e dante will show the words they put in public as these great all time sayings and the reality of what they did are usually 2 different things.

The presidents that are given the highest notariety are ALWAYS those who do the most for the "banks".

Thats goes with the false presumption that what is good for the bank or the corporation is good for that average joe and mary and nothing could be farhter from the truth.

Meanwhile the average joe and mary are standing back saying how can they do something so stoopid!

Huge disconnect between the way the average joe and mary's mind works and the way the minds of the elected work and joe and mary are never the wiser.

Wow that bush is so stoopid!  Meanwhile everyone who knew what was going on knew he was robbing the bank.
