GrinnerMcWolfe -> What is your personal choice in a mattress? (1/26/2011 12:49:26 PM)

Since there are so many different types and styles to choose from, I've discovered that finding a mattress is bloody difficult, though I think I finally settled on one that I wanna get from IKEA. (PS: I dig that place. So much cool stuff.)

So, the thought occurred to me: What do you, members of this community, look for in a mattress? Comfort, certain size, softness or firmness, adjustable, etc?

Also, what do you guys look for when selecting a bed frame?

Waterbed, softside, 90% wave reduction, heated to 30°C.

Pillow top with an egg crate mattress pad on top for added softness.

I have had one of those serious foam mattresses with no metal springs in the past few years and I have NEVER had such an amazing mattress, for sleeping and everything else I do on that bed.

I have a Serta twin bed, the hardest one they make. With a heated mattress pad. LOVE.

This. Natural latex, not Tempur-Pedic, which is too smelly for my delicate nostrils when new.

We have a Select Comfort Air bed.
Beware buying beds from Ikea..normal sheets dont fit them properly as they're a European product. Friends of mine did that ( bought beds at Ikea)and were quite dismayed to find normal sheets (full queen king)dont fit them.

The best mattress I ever had was a Stearns & Foster.  It was deliciously firm.  I also love having a feather mattress topper on my bed.  You still have the firm support, but you sink down into a cloud.  One time I was at an inn & they had a feather bed with a down comforter & down pillows.  It seriously was like sleeping on a cloud.

I agree with Calamitysandra on this one.  I've slept almost exclusively in a waterbed since the mid-1970s.  When I've slept in anything else it bothered my back.  (Some people do say that a waterbed hurts their back.)  My waterbed is "old school".  Just a plastic bag filled with water in a wood frame.  No anti-waves.  No softsides.  It helps keep me warm in winter and cool in summer.

I look for comfort, and price, and size, Daddy and i had a full size and it was just to small, so we got a king. And I don't use bed frames, we put our bed directly on the floor, because  my dad was going to make us a custom made captains bed frame, and finally we decided not to go that rout and he just made a platform that's sturdy as hell and the bed sits on a  platform.

We saved about 1000 dollars off our bed by not buying the box spring and the frame and stuff, just the mattress.

Tempurpedic - I got the firmest model they make. I love it. No lumps, no pressure points, and very comfortable. Downside is they are expensive. But after 2 back surgeries comfort is more important than money.

My parents have a temperpedic memory foam bed and I don't like their bed, and yes I lay in my parents bed, and no it's not a creepy thing or nothing. In the summers it gets so bloody hot and our little abode has no ac, so I am graciouslly allowed to lay in their bed in the main house with the ac on. I frequently spend 5 or 6 hours a day on their bed in the summer.

I have a Serta pillowtop king, but I want to get a waterbed again....I had one quite a while ago, and I loved it....not to mention the kittehs did too....warm in the winter, cool in the summer.......I'd keep the heater turned down in the winter, and used a spongy topper on it.....and a comforter.  That was all I'd use.  I didn't have any problems with the kittehs and claws and water....the occasional pinhole, which was easy to patch.  Now, I'm not so sure.....when ever KB gets stoopid and in a mood, he jumps up and drags himself along the edge of the bed with his claws.  But I slept the best on the full wave mattress.....my parents have a waveless, it's okay, but I like being able to make waves.

Right now, my bed is just on a bed frame that came with it.  My bedroom is a little an the small side, so the headboard and footboard would take up a lot of space.  But on the bright side, the chains fit really well on the legs!

As far as sheets not fitting the mattresses, when I had the waterbed, I hated the waterbed sheets.....they always would work loose on me.....I had a queen waterbed, so I got one king and one full sheet and used them...the king had plenty of extra sheet to tuck in, and the full had room to hang over the side.  Now the problem I have is finding sheets that fit the height of the mattress.....they are either too big or not big enough.  I have to find those little sheet straps......easier said than done!

Polybygolly -> RE: What is your personal choice in a mattress? (1/26/2011 11:51:54 PM)

I love and adore my waterbed! It is heated to a toasty 90 F. It is full wave- but has a solid band across where my back goes for firmer support. In summer I turn it down and it cools me.

If I have anything to say about it I will never go back to a normal hardside bed. yuck. My achey body and bad back is so much happier and my restless legs have relaxed being all toasty warm.

Plus it has a mirrored headboard and bookcase. [:D]
