One compliments the other.

I learned more about Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Marine & Atmospheric Science in college.

The rest I learned elsewhere.

Just a smudge of the basics in college, between 2 colleges.

College? What's that?

I am not ashamed to say that I didn't even make it through high school. I am sure I've said it before but I will say it again. Pregnant at age 16, the first time I had sex. Shotgun wedding. Mother of two at age 18. Three if you count the children's father.

I've been working to pay my own way since I was 12, the youngest age I could get a paper route. I've been co-owner in two businesses and self employed. Right now I manage a company with three employees and keep the owner in line, as well as deal with the bitches from the other company here in the same building. In addition, I am running my own new business on the side.

I didn't have the luxury of a formal education. It's all been life, learning on the fly, charging ahead and making sure everything gets done. I have no complaints.

I got some book-learing in College, which as we all know is not necessarily an education.  I got educated on the streets in my 20's.  And since then I have been educated by life.

Before college, in the library across from my school.

dcnovice -> RE: Where did you get educated? (1/27/2011 4:20:12 PM)

I've been educated one way or the other through just about every experience of my life: school, college, work, travel, ordinary living.

I had the good fortune to have a great college experience. Coming from a fairly sheltered background, I met people with strikingly different perspectives and views. That alone was a huge education. The school also had a strong commitment to community service. I got involved, tutoring kids and volunteering at homeless shelters. Lots of learning there. I also spent one of my college years in England, the only time I've lived in another culture. Then, of course, there was the formal learning: hearing incredibly smart people share what they knew, reading mind-stretching books, and refining one's thinking and writing skills. All this to say I'm very glad college was an option for me.

school I learned the basics we all learn
college I learned how to party an oh yeah...computer science and paralegal studies
from my husband I learned how to be a wife and a loving partner and how to care for those who addictions
from my kid I learned how to be patient and how to give above my own selfish desires
my dad, I learned philosophy and religion and how to laugh, about music and how to make the peace sign of a Vulcan
my mom, sisters and brother, friends, I learned who I am as a person, what I want and don't want for my life

And from Master I've learned how to trust in God, how to love again and how to realize in the end it will all work out
and all kinds of other things that I knew nothing about.

BSME - University of New Mexico
MBA - University of Phoenix
MS Env Engineering - Colorado School of Mines

But almost all my useful learning has been on the job or through life.

hausboy -> RE: Where did you get educated? (1/27/2011 8:54:12 PM)

In elementary school, I learned that no one cares if you are a boy or a girl, what seemed to matter the most was if you could kick the ball really far....make the other kids laugh....and find a balance between being smart but not being a know-it-all.

In high school I learned that the drive for popularity and conformity makes teenagers turn into vicious bullies without a conscience or a care. I learned that it's better to believe in yourself, that to lose yourself by being what everyone else wants you to be.

In college I learned that people will respect you if you take risks and stand up for what you believe in.... I learned about leadership, character and mental fortitude.  None of that was learned in a classroom, however.

On the street: I learned that a degree was a piece of paper that some people felt defined a person's identity.  I learned that what we earn is not what we are worth.  I learned that there is nothing more resilient than the human spirit, and that change is the only constant in my life.

I can tell you where I went to school.  And what subjects I studied.  I can tell you what the piece of paper says, and all the various things that people claim make me an "expert" in my field.  My education was received between waking up in the morning, and going to sleep at night, from the date on m birth certificate to today's date on the calendar.

But I cannot say that I am educated, because that somehow implies to me, a sense of finality-- that I've stopped learning.
