Come on now. It snows every year.  We have had way worse snow then this- but for a small snow-- all hell breaks out.

We are one pussy of a nation- second only to the UK.

It has snowed 2-3 feet every few days in the past- and we were in better shape.

We have nothing efficient and have become a broken down- has been - city on a hill about to sell off our forests like the UK. 

The Brits dont need to burn down the White House again-  hell- we had 6 inches of snow!   Which happens every year.  Hello?   Why is this such a vision of incompetence?

No wonder we never win wars- we cant deal with a simple snow.

Hello?

The Brits would be proud of us!

Now we can throw money at it- and create a "Snow Czar".!

In addition, this is the first time in recorded history that New York City has had two snowstorms drop 18.0 inches or more of snow in the same winter. The last one was the post-Christmas blizzard in December.
Ironically, both of these snowstorms, the one in December and the one in January, hit New York City on the 26th and 27th of the month.

The seasonal snowfall now stands at 56.1 inches in New York City. The snowiest season on record occurred during the winter of 1995-96, when 75.6 inches of snow fell. Given the expected weather pattern over the next month or so, this figure is well within reach. Currently this winter stands at number 6 on the all-time snowiest winters on record.



I'm not even going to touch the US/UK nonsense.

"2-3 feet every few days" may be normal in your neck of the woods, but around here (coastal NY and CT) it isn't.

I think you're over-reacting just a tad....again.

Status: offline 		Maybe they are pussies about snow in your part of the country but in my stomping grounds, snow removal is one of the few things about government I don't complain about. They've always managed to do a good job.

Status: offline 		Pahunk get a grip on how snow and ice work at different temperatures. That would you might stop posting stuff that makes you look silly....... errr sillier.

In the UK at least, the problem was as follows. Snow falling when the temperature is around freezing is the hardest to deal with. It falls and melts and freezes again, over and over with each fresh snowfall. Now, you can use all the equipment you want to move deep drifts, its easy, but ice is harder to deal with.

Status: offline 		Yeah, it snows, get used to it, because with winter in some parts of the world snow is a possibility. As to people failing in such conditions, what, are we meant to be driving onward in all conditions, have we come to the point in life where we believe we control the planet. It is simple really, can't move because our infrastructure cannot cope, slow down and think the problem through, even just stay put until conditions improve. Food, does no one keep a reserve of food in the house these days, you know tinned or dried stuff, yeah, I know maybe not what we want to eat, but, it's food, good for when we can't get out. You know, nature hides when the weather conditions are bad, perhaps taking a leaf out of their book might serve us well, accept that we are controlled by the planet and it's actions not the other way round, perhaps it is even cheaper that way.

But, what is wrong with personal responsibility, do we expect the authorities to respond to us, have we gone that far that we can't do anything unless authorities make the place safe for us, get a grip, slip on ice, affix something to your shoes to keep you upright, deep snow, well telemark skies or snow shoes, they are all still available if you care to look. Oh, the car, that thing we seem not to be able to do without, well, snow chains, studded tyres, even unstudded winter tyres are good in snow, take some responsibility, if you must drive, make sure it is safe to drive, equip your vehicle and yourself and stuff the failing excuse ridden authorities.

Status: offline 		In the 25 years I've lived here, we have never had a winter with 2 - 3 feet of snow every few days. Since you're only a couple of hundred miles southwest of me, I doubt you have ever had one either.

Status: offline 		Snow that falls at around 20 to 32 F with the temperature falling below 20F are the hardest to deal with. If the temp does not fall standard chemicals work great, at least down to around 20F, and snow is easy to handle. So your snows around freezing are actually the easy ones to clear.

When the temp falls below 20 chemicals like calcium chloride are required but even they have limited effectiveness and are very expensive in both material cost and corrosive costs to equipment and roadways.

But of course what really counts is the equipment and training... if your City does not receive a lot of snow it will not spend money on equipment. When a snow comes they are often overwhelmed.

It is no fault of the cities…they must spend their money to match the average snowfall in their area.

The Blizzard of 1996 was a severe nor'easter that paralyzed the U.S. East Coast with up to 4 feet (1.2 m) of wind-driven snow from January 6 to January 8, 1996. It was followed by another storm on January 12th, then unusually warm weather and torrential rain which caused rapid melting and river flooding.

Picture cars stuck everywhere, bus not running because of snow drifts in the middle of the road, taxi service closed because they can't get their vehicles out of the parking lot......and a boss saying "we really need people that show up for work"

I said the problem was ice, caused by snow falling, melting then freezing. You can put all the salt you like on the snow but at 0 F it will just re-freeze.

If you get that much snow, though, you probably have the infrastructure--legions of plows, overtime budget for the folks operating them in the wee hours--for dealing with it. For dear old DC, in contrast, major blizzards are relatively rare, so it doesn't make sense for us to own a fleet of plows that spend most of their lives rusting. that means things may be a bit ragged when the big snow comes, but the overall trade-off works for us.
