Why?

Not only do they all those items look unprofessional, they also make the officer easier to identify.

littlewonder -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/27/2011 8:26:54 PM)

ok I don't get it.

I thought this was always policy for almost any government job. It's been the policy with our local sheriff and all local government offices for as long as I can remember. The only government employees that can get away with it here is the juvenile probation office and only the ones who work undercover narc detail.

This should have been the policy all along and imo, it's about time.

Hillwilliam -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/27/2011 9:19:30 PM)

Ok, so you are saying that a police officer is not allowed to look like a gang PUNK.

Is there a problem with that?

(for those who object to the word 'punk' I could have used the word SCUM)

Arpig -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 12:38:53 AM)

Sorry, but if you can't see why its dumb, then there's no point trying to explain it...what the fuck does having a tattoo or a gold tooth have to do with being a good cop?

WyldHrt -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 12:51:37 AM)

Sooo... are already sworn officers with gold teeth or tats 'grandfathered', or will they have to pay out of pocket to replace the gold teeth or have the tats (both of which which were apparently allowed when they were sworn in) removed in order to keep their jobs?
Sorry, late here and I didn't see a definitive answer, at least on on the tats.

KenDckey -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 4:46:35 AM)

I don't like tats and not into gold teeth and crap so I can see the intent, but I think it is really a stupid policy.

AquaticSub -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 4:56:15 AM)

~FR~

I hate these policies. For one, what does their tattoos and piercings have to do with their ability to do their job? Has anyone done studies and found that tattoo ink contains chemicals that destroy one's abilities to be a police officer? For another, forcing law enforcement personal to refrain from expressing themselves through tats and other body mods furthers widens the gap between law enforcement and civilians. "Them vs. us" is a very dangerous mentality and not something I particularly want to encourage. I'd rather have a variety of law enforcement officers who the different subcultures can relate to.

That and my objection to the "normal" lower lobe piercing. At one point does something become normal? I see tons and tons of people with visible ink. Does it have to be a 30 percent of the total population? 40? 50? 65.9?

I'd be more in favor of this if they just went "No tats or piercings visible while on duty - no exceptions".

Seriously? You don't see why people who carry guns and are in charge of upholding the laws and protecting us need to be professionals AND look the part of professionals?

In almost any scenario of a cop's daily duties, his appearance plays a role. A woman has just been raped by gold-toothed gangbangers. Another one in a blue shirt shows up. Yeah, that's healthy for her. A man is pulled over on the side of the highway by a police car. He digs through his glove box, turns around to see the lizard man at his door. Surprised, and in fight or flight mode, he hits the gas and causes a 10 car pile-up, killing several people.

Or how about the fact that since private companies get to decide what corporate image they wish to project, police departments should have the same latitude? Or that piercings can get snagged and cause harm to the officer in the course of their duties?

pahunkboy -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 8:25:59 AM)

I would like a gold tooth.  That would be so cool.

Moonhead -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 8:34:39 AM)

Have a look through your stash. Maybe you've got a few mixed in with the other crap you could get fitted?

And Madoff ass raped old people while wearing a suit.  Do you now want to propose that detectives no longer wear ties and jackets?

See what stupid analogies get you?

Aylee -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 9:18:16 AM)

Reply to Aqua,

As I understood the new rules it is a "no visible" policy.

But as to why those things are a bad idea.  If a LEO arrests someone and has a visible tat, piercing, or gold teeth things, and the law breaker ends up going up the river for 20 years, it is far easier for the bad guy to identify that officer to his buddies for retaliation.  (wow, that was a run on sentence.)

Making a this policy a "none at all" policy keeps the department from lawsuits about appropriate and inappropriate tattoo, et cetera, decisions.  If a prospective employee has a "FTW" tattooed across his neck and is denied employment, he cannot sue the department because Officer Snuffy has a yin-yang on his neck.

All types of employment have their "personal expression" restrictions.  Usually it falls under, "dress code."  Why should LEOs be different?

defiantbadgirl -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 9:54:47 AM)

What about hair length? Requiring men to wear their hair short is often said to look more professional, yet I have seen professional looking male attorneys with some pretty long ponytails.

edited to specify male attorneys
