ok I don't get it. I thought this was always policy for almost any government job. It's been the policy with our local sheriff and all local government offices for as long as I can remember. The only government employees that can get away with it here is the juvenile probation office and only the ones who work undercover narc detail. This should have been the policy all along and imo, it's about time.

Sooo... are already sworn officers with gold teeth or tats 'grandfathered', or will they have to pay out of pocket to replace the gold teeth or have the tats (both of which which were apparently allowed when they were sworn in) removed in order to keep their jobs? Sorry, late here and I didn't see a definitive answer, at least on on the tats.

I don't like tats and not into gold teeth and crap so I can see the intent, but I think it is really a stupid policy.

~FR~ I hate these policies. For one, what does their tattoos and piercings have to do with their ability to do their job? Has anyone done studies and found that tattoo ink contains chemicals that destroy one's abilities to be a police officer? For another, forcing law enforcement personal to refrain from expressing themselves through tats and other body mods furthers widens the gap between law enforcement and civilians. "Them vs. us" is a very dangerous mentality and not something I particularly want to encourage. I'd rather have a variety of law enforcement officers who the different subcultures can relate to. That and my objection to the "normal" lower lobe piercing. At one point does something become normal? I see tons and tons of people with visible ink. Does it have to be a 30 percent of the total population? 40? 50? 65.9? I'd be more in favor of this if they just went "No tats or piercings visible while on duty - no exceptions".

Reply to Aqua, As I understood the new rules it is a "no visible" policy. But as to why those things are a bad idea. If a LEO arrests someone and has a visible tat, piercing, or gold teeth things, and the law breaker ends up going up the river for 20 years, it is far easier for the bad guy to identify that officer to his buddies for retaliation. (wow, that was a run on sentence.) Making a this policy a "none at all" policy keeps the department from lawsuits about appropriate and inappropriate tattoo, et cetera, decisions. If a prospective employee has a "FTW" tattooed across his neck and is denied employment, he cannot sue the department because Officer Snuffy has a yin-yang on his neck. All types of employment have their "personal expression" restrictions. Usually it falls under, "dress code." Why should LEOs be different?
