No busboys, the servers in the dining room cleaned their own tables, and this wasn't a club place, it was a hotel lounge, one of only 2 large ones in town, so we were always busy. No entertainment, just pool tables, and a sound system that we controlled. It was like a pub style place with a lot of locals and in the summer slammed with tourists. The owners were super cool about not putting on an overabundance of staff so we could make that kind of money as long as we could keep up with it and the service didn't suffer. So it was usually just one bartender in the pub on weeknights and a cocktail server on weekends. We didn't tip out back of house staff ever, they made a good salary, but I would always give the dishwasher some cash anyway because usually he ran and got me ice and kept me in clean glasses all night so it was worth throwing him 20 bucks or so.

I will work there again starting in May til about September this year, it's an awesome way to make some extra money and I only do it a few nights a week. Plus, we get all those strapping sailors in there sooooo it's ok on the eyes too. .

The comment about tips being a significant part of the front of house staff's pay?
It's an irksome and irritating job, and the fact that a lot of employers weasel out of paying a living wage on the assumption that patrons will make up the shortfall doesn't help. Sadly, there's plenty of stuff that might make you forget that...

I said no such thing.

I said I work HOTEL RECEPTION, which is NOT the same as wait staff.. which is why I prefaced my initial post with soemthng along the lines of "leaving aside food service ..etc"

I have worked food service (albeit, almost 30 yrs ago..).. I would never presume to compare hotel recption to wait staffing..

(and as I am sleep deprived and off to bed , I will give the caveat that I am not making as much sense as I should be, I think... but fuck it, I am SLEEPY...)

Mea culpa: that was aimed at the post I quoted, not the ones you'd made earlier in the thread. Sorry about that.

Oh TFFT! My degree of confusion had reached a level where you couldn't measure it with existing technology :)

It seems a bit garbled, true enough.

Nah it's probably just me - these new painkillers are banging :)

No criticism implied or intended BTW - I was just really perplexed :)

Arse. That was a bit of a faux pas.

Sorry, Greedytop. I apologise again.

I'd never try that in case they pissed in my soup.

Huh? What? You mean they're not supposed to do that?

Yeah it's permanent (well, for life at any rate - if it changes after I'm dead that'll be a bonus) ... about 25 years ago I (through no fault of my own) ended up cutting a car almost in half using a motorcycle as a blunt instrument :)

So it's either take the painkillers, or not walk ... move ... sleep ... little things like that :)

I had my annual meds review the other day and they've changed my dosage and types, from single type to a sort of cocktail. So far the results are very encouraging, although there's always a period of "WTF?" while one's system gets used to the new lot. Hence the perpetual confusion ATM.
