When I was single I never emailed people first. I'm 43 and from a very traditional background. Women just did not make the first move, and I can't shake that off. I think it's great that you're doing so!

Now, as a couple he'll look through the profiles and tell me who to email. It doesn't really bother either of us if we get a reply or not. In fact thinking about it he doesn't even ask me if we've had replies - I just tell him when we have.

However, going back to the single days, and now if we get an email from someone who isn't for us, I always tried/ try to send a quick, polite email back to acknowledge theirs.

Of course, there's been times when I've done that and received a whole heap of abuse in return, but you can't please all of the people all of the time etc...

I have no troubles emailing people if I notice something in their profile/picture that interests me.
However, I do not if I'm interested IN them, as a potential somethingsomething. Why? Because I am not located where they are and honestly I'm a bit skeptic about the whole online thing..and then there're few other reasons that only concern me n you wouldn't get to know unless you knew me.
