I see this as a blow to the GOP. None of this is a surprise, really. Despite the rhetoric, Republicans rode into the House on a wave of generalized anger focused at incumbents, vs. support for Republicans (who were polling even lower than Congress)--and the leadership is entirely aware of this. The question is what to do. Like the nuttiest of the religious right, once the GOP made the decision to lump them in, they had to start bending to their wishes or risk losing them. The Tea Party may be naive--but they came to make a fuss, and they're going to. As the GOP continues to hobble together these questionable political marriages, the tail is beginning to wag the dog. At some point, perhaps they'll start to lose GOP members themselves. After all, parties change over time.
