If everyone bought silver, food prices would drop, the Internet would be forever free, oil would be plentiful, the economy would boom, and peace would come to the globe.

Oh, and everyone would have a pony.

As much as I looked, I could not find a single sentence that supported the idea of free internet.

The CTIA -Wireless Association also applauded the initiative by Obama. In an emailed statement, Chief Executive Steve Largent said the association is looking forward to working with White House to get to that 98 percent goal.

"The President, along with the majority of policymakers in Washington, realize that in order for the U.S. wireless industry to continue to meet consumer demand and fuel the 'virtuous cycle' of innovation and competition, we must have more spectrum. Our members are willing to spend billions of dollars to purchase reallocated spectrum at auction so we can remain the world's leading wireless industry and provide consumers with the best products and services," Largent said.

What I did read is how they want to bring 98% of the US up to high speed. Anyone have any ideas how many areas of the US are still on dial up with no access to high speed at all?

I may have missed it, but nowhere in the story does it mention "free internet" or "Gvt paid Internet", rather it is about freeing up unused spectrum and expanding access to more people.

kdsub -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 9:36:13 AM)

I think it is a wonderful idea …remember we will still have the final say as a majority voter as to what controls are placed on the service….And controls will be necessary just as there are controls by your provider right now.

In the new world of global economics we need every advantage to our children we can provide and free internet access is a pretty good start.

Even if this were to come about I don’t see all providers world wide packing it in…Otherwise I believe there will always be service providers not affiliated with the government if you chose to use them.

I think it is a wise use of tax payer money that will return dividends to the government coffers.

Question for you - with the US in the state it's in now - dismal education, severe urban decay, behind many other countries in math and science...is creating this infrastructure to modernize the US worth the risk of possible government censorship?

It would be under a Republican government, but with the Kenyan in charge, it's a terrible idea.

Yes, I suppose, the current administration is in favor of net neutrality, but I doubt the neocons are.  So, I am against it unless they can put a bigger FCC together with broader powers and a neutrality law in place, which is more government.
In some cases you need a bigger government, because it seems investment in the US, is no longer palatable.  When people in other countries will work for so little, thereby increasing profits for the managers/owners, that is where they're going to invest.   Where does that leave US?    Build, or subsidize building...  The US needs jobs, major infrastructure updating, and there are no incentives for businesses to invest in rural/very poor areas.

There is no way, a good percentage of Americans will ever be able to, participate in sharing the wealth possible in this country, without access, in terms of computers, and available rail systems, IMO.   M

flcouple2009 -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 9:59:10 AM)

One question.  When focusing on the 15 billion spent,  did you just miss the almost 30 billion raised by the sale of wireless spectrum?

Would you please point out where in the article it mentioned free internet?

As usual you picked the tidbits you wanted and then twisted them to make the point you wanted.

mnottertail -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 10:04:54 AM)

What the folks cajoling about socialism and taxation and all other manner of sheep bleatings are missing is, that most of the governments that are climbing up our asses now have had and continue to have long term policies and funding and partnerships (yep, you read that right) with sectors of their economy and businesses. They actually plan ways to create and advance markets.

We, babble about reducing taxes by 2% and claim that will create jobs and marketshare, but it is obviously a simpletons view of the world, but we americans are fine with simpletons, we have so many clamouring to be heard.

This isn't news to me.   This isn't news to venture capitalists/bankers on wall street either, I would imagine.   Why is it they don't lobby for products/rules that would actually improve the lives of the masses in the US?

This is why I was flaberggasted by Obama's turn about face, extending Bush tax cuts, while we remain involved in multiple wars, income disparity is at an all time high, and everyone bitches about deficit.    Bought and paid for propaganda at it's best.     M

It is any wonder why C-span is copyrighted?

I thought they covered the peoples business.

mnottertail -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 10:30:48 AM)

You heard the holla!!!!  Simpletons want a tax cut, to become globally competitive, didn't want to hear another fuckin thing.

As an elected official, he gave them what they wanted.

Musicmystery -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 11:03:36 AM)

Frankly, free Internet everywhere would GREATLY increase my productivity.

Right now I have to plan around where I'll be with access.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 11:26:11 AM)

FR

Does it say "free" or even government subisidzed anywhere? To me it sounds more like the restrictions placed on the Comcast acquisition of NBC where a private company was forced to agree to discounted rates on internet service and computer purchases. (Yeah, Obama isnt a socialist).

Musicmystery -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 11:34:13 AM)

This rant gets old.

We're in a mixed economy, capitalist and socialist, just like the bulk of the world, and you know it. We have been for over a century.

And the very good reasons for it.

Your reply gets old. Yes, we are a mixed economy, but every fucking day under this administration we move closer to the socialist side of the spectrum, and you know it.

mnottertail -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 1:04:20 PM)

which is a very very good thing.

Dnomyar -> RE: Free Government Internet (2/11/2011 3:20:34 PM)

There is already free internet in some areas of Mich and other states. The internet wont get to all areas of the states. Hard to believe but there are areas in the US where there still is no phone service.
