Egypt echoes across region: Iran, Bahrain, Yemen

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The possible heirs of Egypt's uprising took to the streets Monday in different corners of the Middle East: Iran's beleaguered opposition stormed back to central Tehran and came under a tear gas attack by police.

Demonstrators faced rubber bullets and birdshot to demand more freedoms in the relative wealth of Bahrain. And protesters pressed for the ouster of the ruler in poverty-drained Yemen.

The protests — all with critical interests for Washington — offer an important lesson about how groups across Middle East are absorbing the message from Cairo and tailoring it to their own aspirations.

The heady themes of democracy, justice and empowerment remain intact as the protest wave works it way through the Arab world and beyond.

Gonna be interesting.

The whole Arab world and Iran could use a shaking up.  Hopefully, when the dust settles, there will be more representative governments.  And we might pick up some friends along the way.

Lets not forget about Jordan and Syria..I hope that Iran is next if it happens. These people better be prepared for the fight of their lives though. I think the number of dead in Egypt is around 350..

Unfortunately, I can't shake this little feeling in my gut that says this could be the start of some very very unpleasant things in the future, on a worldwide scale. However, looking at best case scenarios, I have a lot of hope for this all.

It has a very ominous feel to me too, BK. But at the same time, any unpleasant consequences that may accrue from the upheaval in the Mideast were probably inevitable, and it was just a matter of time before they began to unfold. If it didn't happen this year, it would have happened next year, or the year after.

I think this could be the beginning of the utopian future as envisioned by the late Gene Roddenberry, in his various Star Trek incarnations.  Well at least it is what I hope for.  The down side though, is this could lead to our premature extinction as a species.  I shall however; remain positive in my thoughts.

It has long been argued by many voices in the Arab world that there were 3 main grievances fuelling anti-Western sentiment in the region - Western support for corrupt dictators and autocrats; massive oil revenues lining those corrupt pockets and not benefiting the ordinary people; and Israel.

It looks like the Arab world is beginning to address the first two issues. If they succeed with the first, then the second issue will be resolved fairly easily one imagines. Democratic government will enable the fair and equitable redistribution of oil wealth to benefit the people.

IMHO, the best intervention the West can offer at the moment is to collectively pressure Israel to the negotiating table and to a just peace with the Palestinians. If an Israeli-Palestinian two State treaty can be achieved, (and it most certainly can be achieved), then both the West and the Arab world can wipe the slate clean and start again. Israelis would finally get the peace and security they crave. The biggest (and only) losers in such a scenario would be the terrorists, extremists, arms merchants and war-mongers.

Some bold imaginative statesmanship can seize the moment to bring about momentous lasting and universally welcome advances for all - the West, the Arab peoples and the Israeli people. All could enjoy the blessings of peace and benefits of modernity and prosperity. We would all have secure futures worth living for.

Can Obama, Cameron et al rise to the occasion? I for one fervently hope so!

I had great hopes for Obama when he was elected (to be fair he has mostly been trying to put out the fires he inherited). I don't know if he is up for that level of statesmanship.

Yes I understand your perspective. Perhaps this is the opportunity to make or break his Presidency ..... I do prefer to be optimistic in these matters!

Let's hope for the best - the prize is certainly worth working hard for isn't it?

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Egypt echoes across region: Iran, Bahrain, Yemen (2/14/2011 8:16:02 PM)

I'm almost certain he is not. He can't even negotiate with his own party without getting bent over backwards and horsefucked. The political leaders in the MidEast would laugh him out of the room.

If the new regiems in the Muslim world, will allow peace in Palestine it will be a wonderfull thing.

The only reason the war began and has continued is the use of the Palestinians as pawns.

and whom exactly are the Israelis to negotiate with?

Well, it's really not on his shoulders.

I never cease to be amazed that we as Americans seem to think that the world revolves around us and every world crisis rests in our laps.

TheHeretic -> RE: Egypt echoes across region: Iran, Bahrain, Yemen (2/14/2011 9:33:03 PM)

Nice idea, Tweak, but the Palestinians and Arabs don't seem interested in a two state solution. And given that Israel is about to find out what a peace treaty is worth in those corners of the world, why the fuck would they be interested in paying dearly for another?

Perhaps my initial post wasn't clear enough. There is no particular reason for this to be an American solo effort (nor any particular reason why it couldn't be either for that matter).

There are at least two other platforms that could lead this effort. One is the UN. The other is the Middle East Quartet which consists of the European Union, The USA, Russia and the UN.

From where I sit, the Quartet would seem well placed to lead the initiative I have suggested. It's broad enough to be representative, influential enough to be effective, yet small enough to be dynamic and flexible.

There are a number of views on the obstacles to a two state solution in the Middle East. There are good grounds for believing the opposite of your assertion. But this thread is hardly the place for that discussion.

This is currently a hot topic on another thread and might best be discussed on the 'Wikileaks reveals Israeli preparation for war' thread

America is the only country capable of putting enough political pressure on Israel to make a difference. This has been made clear in past negotiations. I think this is what hlen was getting it.

My question is what would the U.S administration do if any new democracies rejected U.S foreign policy ?

Moonhead -> RE: Egypt echoes across region: Iran, Bahrain, Yemen (2/15/2011 5:25:48 AM)

The same thing as they always do: oust the democratically elected leader and install a despot who'll do as he's told.

God help me, but I'm starting to agree more and more with Popeye.

It's time we step off the international stage and tend to our own business first.

Don't expect things in Iran to go like Egypt.  The Army and Police are going to so as the Government orders.

Now it is being reported that the opposition leaders may face execution.
