The cat is at it again ?

Status: offline 		I am currently remodelling my home, that means every floor covering has been removed and junked and the walls and floors scrubbed down, the floors recovered with laminate flooring and the walls repainted and the cat is still here looking very uncomfortable. Now I did expect the cat to leg it for a while, even just plain bugger off, as I don't own my cat, but it's still here and trying to re establish it's territory. As soon as my back is turned the cat sneaks off and takes a pee in the corners of the property, annoying at first, but now I watch the bugger and have a spray bottle of vinegar and water ready to neutralise the puddles when I find them or just plain follow the cat when it decides to go to a part of the house it has no business being in.

Now I understand moggies do mark their territory by urinating, they need to, to feel comfortable, but the whole idea of remodelling is to clean the place up, so the territory marking is becoming an annoyance, as the laminate flooring cost me a lot to buy and a long time to lay, I cannot afford for it to be destroyed by a moggy, so has anyone any suggestions, any experience of territory marking cats with remodelled homes ?

I am seeking a solution, not necessarily all my own way, but a compromise, comfort for the cat and comfort for me, i.e. not all my efforts ruined and my money down the drain.

The other thing is previously I was only aware male cats pissed in the corners to mark their territory, I was not aware female cats did it too.

Maybe try a new brand of kitty litter, and one that is not perfumed - can you get Arm & Hammer Unscented?

Is she angry at you?

maybe if the cat is limited to just the room where her litterbox is for a while may be an option, but then, i never tried to train a cat.

Cats are creatures of comfort. They want it, and heaven help you if they do not have it. She took comfort in the home and the scent of it.

Look at the assault you have done to her sense of smell...cleaning solution, dust, paint, new floor tile and the adhesive used during the installation. Geez!! And all without her permission!!

I would wonder if she is marking her territory as much as she is trying to give the joint a homey smell. Can you salvage a piece of the old carpet and place it in the same room as her litter box? That might allow her to transition more easily.

Fantastic idea.

She might just be stressed and the peeing is a nervous habit.  If she doesn't return to the litter box, call the vet.  Often cats stop using the litter box when they have a UTI or something - they associate the box with the pain they feel while relieving in the box.

That was my thought. Maybe she has a urininary tract infection. I would also keep a very clean litter box.

Status: offline 		She's not "marking" her territory per se, but if you think about it, a cat's whole world is the familiar-smelling floor, and you just ripped it all up and put her in an unfamiliar world. She's peeing in corners because she's stressed and in an unfamiliar world and she's trying to make it smell familiar again.

I used to have a cat who used the litter box faithfully except for every time we moved. She'd always go in a closet, or basket of laundry, or on somebody's shoes for the first week or two until she got accustomed to the new place.

And, we all know that all cats are insane to some degree, lol.

i'm a bit confused by this. Who does own it? is it a neighborhood stray or something? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding. If I had someone else's cat coming into my house and peeing on things, I'd call the RSPCA or your nearest equivilant, and get it taken away.

Status: offline 		The cat was a stray destined to be terminated because her owner could not be found, so I sort of ended up with it. She is a peculiar cat, nothing at all like the cats I have had before, she tries to come close, but stops herself and keeps away from me. I know she is stressed about all the upheaval, but the upheaval was necessary as the cat caused a lot of it, with her toilet habits.

I feel something bad has happened to the cat in the past, as she will not leave the house, only if I go out will she come out and when I go out further afield, the cat knows and does want to move out of the house. Sometimes if I am gone for long, I know to keep a sharp eye out for mines on the floor, as it also seems if I am not around, hey, it's a free for all, crap anywhere, sod the nice clean litter tray, yes, I clean the tray daily and fill it with new compressed wood chippings.

The reason why I said what I did about not owning the cat, is because my belief is the creatures that stay with us, do so because they want to, not because they are owned, that being, my cat is free to bugger off whenever it wants onto it's next human sucker when it feels that need.

Friends call my cat, the wife and say we are ideally suited, and yes, it is like a Mexican stand off sometimes me and her, with her toilet habits, I feel she knows she is doing wrong, but I also feel she is doing it out of spite, just to piss me off, as soon as she notices I have noticed her acting odd, she stops and looks all innocent, or changes her direction of travel.

actually females cats do that too!

P.S.- i once had a cat that got "built" into the walls during some remodeling. We had to tear down part of the wall to get him out.

When ths monstrous bag of wood chips has gone, she will be getting soil out of the garden, in an attempt to lure her out to the fact that there is an outside to the house. But I know my redecoration is the cause for her current stress, I can't blame the little sod really, for it is only natural. I am today going to get a piece of the old carpet and linoleum for her to hopefully provide some comfort, for I believe that is a good idea. A bit of the old lino under her litter tray I think, and a square of carpet where she sleeps.

Anyone noticed that as soon as one gets something new, the cat has got to inhabit it for a while, mark it with their smell ?

indeed that's why they inhabit my fresh washed laundry if I don't put it away straight away

personally I prefer wood chip litter as it smells less when they use it, however my birman critters did teach me their lesson successfully that they won't tolerate it, no matter how hard I tried...they used every other possibility available to use as their alternative toilet (some of their alternatives I wasn't pleased about) when I tried to get them used to wood chip litter (I mean the stuff being used for rabbits and guinnea pigs)....however, they have won....i ain't gonna try that again with them and stick to the cheapest brand available at tescos
