"the Mubarak of the Midwest" That is how guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine discribed Scott Walker and the debat raging in Wisconsin. Mr. Morello plans to play for the protesters today. quote:
From Source. Calling the proposed budget law "unjust," Morello said he will join "teachers, students, firefighters, policemen, Green Bay Packers, nurses, steel workers, construction workers and religious groups that are filling the streets to protest." He referred to Walker as "the Mubarak of the Midwest" in reference to the Egyptian leader ousted by popular protest, and accused the governor and unnamed corporate allies of trying to "rob American workers of their fundamental rights." I myself have never really listen to RAtM's stuff. Still, its good to have non-union members supporting union members on something like this. Mr. Walker's actions were a mystery to myself until the following blurb in the same article was read: quote:
"If we're going to ask our state and local workers who are doing a great job to pay a little bit more, to sacrifice, to help to balance this budget, we should also give them the flexibility saying that for those members, for those workers, who don't want to be a part of the union, if you don't want that deduction each month out of the paycheck, they should be able to get that $500, $600 or in some cases, $1,000 back that they can apply for their health care and their pension contribution," Walker said. This alone I think shows how much of a sleaze Gov. Scott Walker really is all about. If you dont want to be a member of a Union: Then dont work for a company that has a Union (this is pretty damn, brain dead, simple to understand). However, Gov. Walker's angle is to allow Union members the option to not pay the fee (from restricted to voluntary). And while that might be good on its own, it really is not when you figure in what he's not telling conservatives (the segment that STILL, just doesn't 'get it'). Those Union members *HAVE* to pay MORE for health insurance (not just the rate, but the additional expenditure), because it is manditatory for all US Citizens (Under the ACA of 2010). So essentially, he is trying to starve Unions of money (by forcing members to choose between health insurance for their families, or being in trouble with the federal goverment). By doing this, Gov. Walker does three things: A) Removes power from Union's ability to threaten strikes towards Management. B) Makes any strikes that do take place, less severe and very short (allowing Management to 'wait out' their opponents). C) Easier to bully middle and lower class workers out of a hard day's wage. I may dislike Unions from time to time, but THIS, is simply underhand and thieving (on the part of the Governor). The Unions in that state (and any other state) are not going to back down from this.
