You can wear whatever you like, but it's recommended that if you're not wearing the appropriate, you make a mental note on that. I dress for the occasion, but if I find someone in, say, the subway, who is not dressed like the rest of us mortals, I just assume he/she is dressed for a different occasion. I don't usually stare because it's impolite, and if I can't help it I usually cover it up by adding any kind of sincere, discreet compliment. In the worst cases, I point out why I'm staring (politely), so no one gets any wrong impression. I don't like people who stare, and I don't like to be stared at by them. Culturally, one would dress up differently just to get more attention. However, there ARE people who purposely don't follow the normal dress code, just to say 'leave me alone' or 'this is me.' We should start respecting them more. If they want to wear those "slut" clothes, or if they want to dress goth, or punk, or anything else, it's a good thing for us to notice, but we should mind our own business. People should be free to dress in their preferred way, even if it bothers us. I, for example, am not particularly fond of slut clothes, but maybe sluts are not at all fond of my (amaloli) outfits. When I dress in this type of fashion, it's because I'm going to meet someone who knows and understands me (and my Victorian Era craze). I dress up for that person, for that specific date, in order to be comfortable and happy that day... but everyone else might think me crazy. Especially when I'm on my way to the date, or left alone where people don't have a clue. They will usually whisper and chuckle to themselves while I felt in all honesty like I looked adorable. I don't like people staring, I seriously don't; and in my case, my clothes usually say 'I'm uncomfortable and therefore have to wear my comfort in public, so please leave me alone.' It would be easier to understand if I was just wearing something that said CHANEL. It would be equally strange, but they would approve, and stop staring, and stay quiet. EDIT. Oh. My god. I am IN NO WAY saying Chanel is for certain kind of people. I just wrote Chanel like I could have thought of any other famous trademark's name.
