Do I support watering down formula? No, that would be stupid and harmful to the child. I just don't think that has much to do with water intoxication. That is cause by the infant drinking to much water or any liquid, not the ratio in the bottle.

Again, wrong. Try googling some information. This is what I meant by young people not knowing what they are talking about. Formula's are designed to be the closest to breast milk. When you screw up the ratio, you are screwing up their systems. Too little water can be just as problematic as too much.

By adding extra water to the formula you change how the chemistry is in a body that can not handle it.

I don't even know what is going on in here but...

Babies can have water at any time (separate/between feeding), a few ounces here an there, but it is 'suggested' that infants drink water more frequently throughout the day, it aids in digesting thicker foods as well as to be used in illness/fever situations.

By adding extra water to formula changes no chemistry.  It merely FILLS the child up so he/she won't be getting the proper dosage of nutrients as in the recommended soluble amount of formula.

I would love to see your source for this.

Sorry Tazzy, I got distracted and forgot the "at 6 months+", surprised the paragraph made grammatical sense at all lol.

Really, folks, isn't this just gobsmackingly astonishing? That a country as wealthy as the USA should even be considering the subject of infant malnutrition? I mean, really, what is the essential point in a country getting rich in the first place if it still can't, or won't, feed its children properly? Time and again I've read these debates about the 'necessity of budget cuts' (here in the UK, as well amongst those of other first world nations) and thought, 'Wow. You have to hand it to those forces of the Right for their skills in marketing their ideology. Selfishness and greed are the only possible ways to run a society; all else is that wicked and society-destroying ideology of Satan himself: the Communist.

6 months makes more sense. But even then, its better to give juice than water. Babies lose alot through peeing and crying. Replacing that with plain water is harmful. Adults get enough sodium and electrolytes through our diets. Infants get it only through formula. Replacing that source with water will cause alot of damage.

The topic of juice never came up. If others/we had to mention every detail of the do's and don't's for new mothers,......we'd be here till Christmas.

*also, if a chidlin does have the occasional water, I'd hope the parent would pay attention that the water did not change the regular feeding (of every 4 hours or so) schedule.  If so, then the water/juice should be discontinued.

*Water intoxication does not or will not occur in a single or double dose of water, it would have to be an ongoing predicament.  Likely it is with pure water (no formula at all) between the feedings which precede it.

Infant formula contains electrolytes.
You are forgetting about osmosis.
If there is more water than there is supposed to be then it will change chemistry; those salts will leave the cells to achieve balance.

The electrolytes fall.

Allow me to put this into its proper perspective. We arent discussing supplemental feedings. We are talking about cutting back on the requirements for feedings in infants.

We are talking about less formula, more water.

Water intoxication can happen in adults. Why would anyone believe this could not happen in infants?

Babies require 2 oz of formula in the first month per feeding. It increases to about 7-8 ounces at 6 months. Telling me that giving a baby 1 oz of formula and 1 oz of water (the watering down process) cannot lead to anything but nutritional deficiencies is incredibly short-sighted and... frankly.. stupid.

Maybe I read the article wrong but it looked like doctors thought this was caused from a single incident.  In order to cause chemical imbalance, this 'watering down' issue must have been an ongoing process???  Because there is no way in hell a few mis-feedings can cause such havok chemically.

I will read the article again.  I have never heard of people who did this, to save money--heard of it being done by mistake though (not reading the labeled feeding instructions on the formula)

*k, seems the lady 'stretched it out' uhhg.  makes more sense now.  I for some reason thought this was from a one day event.

Not a one day event, sadly. And something that may become even more frequent as people try to feed their children with less money from WIC.

There were 2 articles:
The example given was not a single incident of too much water; her son was supposed to get 15 cans of formula a month and she was diluting it so that she was only using between 8 and 10.
She was entirely unaware of the dangers.
And given the ignorance of the posters on this forum, we can not blame her and call her a bad mother.

The other point was that this was not a singular occurance; other parents, out of ignorance, were and are making the same mistake.

LOL, I am sure all the impoverished mothers under discussion here are running out to sign up for bio classes, paid for by further watering down the formula to investigate just that point.

Well, then maybe they will learn something. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Like you should learn a few things before opening that trap of yours and declaring everyone else stupid?

Hmmm... sounds about right.

Regardless of how cute you believe you are... how witty you feel... how sarcastic you become... you dont know everything. Quit acting like you do.
