"EEWWwww!!!  That's NOT food!!!"

After a recent thread that included references to Luxemburg cheese, haggis,
scones and Vegimite I want to start another.

My Swedish roommate eats bread that resembles bricks both in texture and
density.  She buys the highest bran-fiber cereals available.  I think both products
quality as wood products, not food.  She also eats (I swear to the Gods!) this
caviar stuff that is loaded in salt and comes in a tube.  The odor is such that
I have to open the windows or leave the room.  I think this product should
be classified as fish bait.

My partner eats calimari, I know that it's kind of food, but it's a squid for crying out loud! They look like little octopus (octopuses? octopi?)

I eat rusk, which he says isn't a food, but I think it's yummy

Well since caviar is fish eggs...technically it is fish bait. As for the rest, keep in mind this is a guy whose eaten bugs before. Fried grasshopper is a good alternative to potato chips, but thats Japan, here...I ahve to admit, theres a place I know that has chocholate covered ants, they dont look or taste different from chocholate sprinkles, and I always get them on plain vanilla ice cream whenever I get the chance.

Yeah in Russia we call it Black bread or "Borodino Bread" good stuff.
It goes really well if you sprinkle slat on it or spread baked bacon fat with garlic on it!!!

Peeps *gag*

But then I adore eating low-salt rice cakes and most people tell me they think I'm eating cardboard coasters...but they taste awesome, way better than potato chips!

I had calamari as an appetizer for the first time the night my Master and I finally got together. It was delicious! We had it again just the other night on our two-month anniversary of getting together in real life. Hey any excuse works for us!

What are disgusting are smoked oysters in a can. My daughter adores them! *Nasty habit she learned from her father* I will buy them for her, but she has to eat them completely out of my site, through the can outside in the dumpster and deodorize her room with air freshener. Doesn’t work! I can still smell the foul odor of them.

Shoot, I wrote a reply yesterday but it didn't go (stupid stolen internet  )

I guess I can't eat calimari for the same reason I can't eat shrimp.  I had to prepare too many of them while in cooking school.  De-vaining (or de-pooping) 25 pounds of shrimp will do that too you.........

I had a roommate that used to eat Kimchi the Korean pickled cabbage... that stuff smelled like a cross between the inside of a very old slipper and the rotting corpse of a roadkill animal on a nice humid August day. I guess it is like anything like that, if you can get it past your nose it may not be half bad.

Snails and calamari are of the same ilk to me because it would be cheaper to get a box of rubber bands, sautee them in garlic butter and a few herbs and eat that instead. I am certain it would taste better too.

Ewwww. I'm with you on all of the above. I will add to your list....although some people seem to think they are yummy. Green beans are NOT edible in my opinion. Neither are brussel sprouts. Or sardines.

Menudo, a Mexican soup made with tripe. Think haggis soup and you come close to what this abominable mockery of cuisine is.

Aromat.

This will quickly distinguish the Swiss from the rest of the world.  It's a seasoning, made mostly of salt and MSG.  The Swiss travel with this stuff, everyone else finds it horrible.

Perfect on hard boiled eggs, bread with butter, and anything else with no flavour.

Yours,

benji

Your snails were overcooked. California snails are quite good.

quietkitten:
Whereas I have eaten and enjoyed a great variety of things, I have to agree with that assessment. Headcheese just makes you wonder what it used to be...

But then I eat all kinds of entrails and enjoy them. Kidneys, sweetbreads, heart, liver, etc. I like brains but I had to give them up as unacceptable in the U.S. That whole Mad Cow things is going to bite us in the ass any day now. Thank you U.S. ranchers - who knew you could feed sick and dead cows to other cows and chickens? Just think of the savings in terms of proper feed you didn't have to buy...

I was at our local Asian market yesterday and it always fascinates me to see the food they have.  In the butcher's case, they have "fresh old chickens"(okay, not really that strange, but the wording amuses me), pig uterus, jellyfish (why the jellyfish isn't at the fish counter, I don't know), fresh pig ears, stomachs, snouts, tongue and feet, cow ears and tongue, duck feet, and so on.

The only one that threw me a bit was pig uterus.  It didn't look at all like I thought it would.  Has anyone had pig uterus?  How do you cook it?  What does it taste like?  I'm curious, but not curious enough to try it.
