Marini -> Which Middle East country is next? (2/23/2011 7:55:42 PM)

With the ever spreading crisis in the Middle East, does anyone want to take a gander at what country will be next?

Iran? Saudia Arabia? Jordan? Lebanon? UAE? Yeman?

Many people are guessing Iran, next.

I am thinking Iran, these days.

Too late to guess--peaceful protests in Saudi Arabia are already underway.

Do they cut off your feet for marching in protest under the liberalization there, or is it still beheading for that?

This is unreal, are we dreaming?

Unfortunately, not, Mari. The more places that blow up, the more certain someplace will head down the worst possible path.

Oh well, so much for our efforts to spread democracy.

Or is that we just want the "right kind" of democracy.

Or is that we just don't really give a shit about democracy as long as whoever is in charge preserves our national interests.

Tell it to Neda, RML. Revolutions tend to be worst for the people who get to live under what comes after.

That's an absolutely amazing statement considering how I have been listening to conservatives tell me for years how we liberated and spread freedom in Iraq.

Yemen has been on the boil since the get-go. There are daily marches and protests there and some violence between regime supporters and opponents. The outcome there is unclear at this stage.

I find it surprising that this is not well known. Tunisia and Yemen were the first countries to openly rebel against their regimes. Isn't this being reported in the US media?

Your statement is the amazing one, rml.  Its your "absolutist" thinking again.

Did you not notice the "tends' in his comment?

And are you claiming that the average Iraqi is worse off now, than under Saddam?

Firm

That must be that ever-present confirmation bias of mine Firm.

I hear Pfizer is coming out with a new cure for that though.

But in answer to your question, it should have been the Iraqi people that made the decision, not us.

The average Iraqis are gone. We are not dealing with who was right, but who was left. How many of them died ? Take that back to 1991 BTW. We should've minded our own fucking business in the first place. Period.

Aneirin -> RE: Which Middle East country is next? (2/24/2011 4:56:27 AM)

Which Middle Eastern country will be next, why does it have to be Middle Eastern, for there are there countries not in the Middle East that are not in ideal situations and what's more, what about closer to home ? In another thread on this board there is discussion on the use of live fire against protesters in the USA.

Revolution has a habit of inspiring revolutionaries wherever they may reside and if not revolutionaries, anyone who is disgruntled and seeks a reason to go for it.

TheHeretic -> RE: Which Middle East country is next? (2/24/2011 6:25:15 AM)

So you don't actually understand what a "revolution" is, as opposed to an outside invasion, huh, RML?

I'm neither surprised, nor interested in educating you.

Richie, you don't have the intellect to be educating anyone.

Sometimes you just have to accept your limitations and make do with what you have.
