For me:
Voice--oh, yeah!  Deep resonance, someone who uses enough breath to finish sentences with the same authority as they start them (dropping the end of a statement just doesn't make me feel like they are in control).
Presence--this is hard to define, and there are people who are totally evil who have it (Osama had it and that really, really disturbed me);  but it is a sense of being confident, comfy in his own skin and living in the present moment--not distracted by other things.
Intellect with shared values--I LOVE conversations where we agree on basic values, but have different takes and it gets exciting and you start to look at things in slightly different ways.  I wouldn't really enjoy dating Christopher Hitchens or Matt Drudge--they are both smart, but the values are different enough that it wouldn't have that conspiritorial and what about this, and what about this? And this? that I find such a turn on!
Smiling with the eyes.  (I spose that is a look thing, but it is more than that.)
Optimism and happiness and passion--someone who loves what they do, a hobby, an idea, I find this incredibly exciting.

Huge, immediate turn-offs
Fundamentalism (and it doesn't have to be religion--I dated a fundamentalist vegan once), but someone who cannot get information from mutiple viewpoints. (I could be accused of hypocrisy here as I've gotten quite strident about things like the war in Iraq and Iran, but while I am totally opposed to a war in Iran, I can also see the difficulties and I know there are nuances.)
Someone who tries to "dominate" by putting me down.  If you really think I'm stupid, or ugly, why would you want to go out with me?

sweetbbwsub31 -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 4:58:17 AM)

Mental turn ons: Dominant (not arrogant) personality, intelligence, whit, wisdom, sense of humor, sensitivity, patience, willingness to put effort into a relationship, HONESTY, openness, good communication skills,  being perceptive, gentle with a powerful balance of "i am in charge and you know it", ability to get into my head.

Physical turn ons: men: bald, tall, big, cuddly, strong, well groomed, freshly shaved (everywhere), the smell of cologne after it has been on for a few hours and mixed with his chemistry (yum)

women: feminine, long hair, full figured, shaved (everywhere), natural, no perfume, clean

turn offs: lying, bad grooming, yucky teeth, smoke, arrogance, too much cologne, perfume, excessive humiliation

Tikkiee -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 4:59:14 AM)

Leaving looks out of it; turn on's would be:
intelligence
a calm, deep voice
a full smile; not just one that turns the mouth up, but one that also lights up the eyes

turn offs would be:
stupidity ( not ignorance, there is a difference )
obvious disregard for others

meatcleaver -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 6:07:19 AM)

Sanctomonius people are a real turn off. People who can throw shit around but can't take it when its thrown back. People who can't bring themselves to apologise when an apology is called for. The apology thing is big with me.

Social Workers! I will never ever date another social worker in my life. They are sanctomonious moral hypocrits and they always blame everyone else for the shit they cause and they all have issues.

Halcyone -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 6:41:41 AM)

Turns me off - Arrogance, clumsy or ignorant cruelty, anything more than occasional crudeness, tardiness.

Turns me on - Confidence, surgeon-sharp cruelty, a good laugh, attention to detail, creativity.

Ceyx -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 7:17:27 AM)

Hm. I would say that my largest turn-offs are a lack of intelligence (to put it kindly), a lack of imagination, and inarticulateness.

This has been true in my relationships both online and off. I don't set an unfairly high bar, but I need to be able to engage with someone thoughtfully and creatively in order to really enjoy their company. If we can exchange wit and words, that helps tremendously as well. I tend to lose interest if those things aren't there.

LadyHugs -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 7:44:24 AM)

Dear Redpetals, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Good topic.

Turn offs and Turn ons:
Poor hygiene -- I especially get sick if I see some man bend over and didn't  wipe his ass right before it is to be spanked, whipped or such--That is a RED on my scenes; same with not cleaning themselves out before fisting.  I also don't like men who drip dry after they piss.  Clean it guys!  My hand will be there, often I wear white formal gloves--not good getting them dirty down under.  It is a turn off if they don't take a shower/bath, don't shave and don't body shave.  I prefer a smooth body and no pubic hair.  Don't like hair grease, prefer a military close cut/flat top and or bald.  I don't like any facial hair.

Poor grooming/dressing -- Some of the huge turn offs for me is to see sloppy men in their photographs as submissive/slave types.  If they can't dress themself and be neat, why should I have them dress me as a slave/servant/vallet/butler?  This is a huge turn off of mine, dominant and or submissive.  Appearences counts.  I see the local dom here in DC, dresses like a slob, acts like a slob and the girls look like they dressed proper; then you get some dominant women who dress, their subs look like they walked off a hippie compound.  So--that is a pet peeve of mine/turn off.

Attitude-- Depending on the circumstances, that governs my selection process.  Shoulder shrugs, I don't know, lazy and couldn't be bothered attitude, not being helpful and kind to others.  I do love a gentleman--I don't get turned on by men who are just out for attention, stuck up, self centered, pompus or arrogant sorts--especially if they call themselves submissive and or slave.  I don't like chronic complainers, poor me, gossip, drama queens/kings, do me and maybe I'll do for you.  I am turned on when my slave steps in as "Guard" and protector, keeping idiots out of my way, this is why the attitude is depending on circumstances.  I like happy positive men, humor if it is in good taste and timing. Military men active/retired-US Marine/US Army are the best in showing their obedience, promptly and smartly take commands and carry themselves well.  US Air Force seem to be the most sloppy in that regard but--boils down to the man himself.

Behavior -- Most telling of any individual -- Talk is cheap--show me the behavior that goes with the attitude.  Claim to be a gentleman--prove it by being one.  I like quiet men, not super shy men; I like men who take it on themselves to give service to me, not have to be commanded like a obedience dog.  I want to trust the behavior, so if I am not looking that slave wearing my collar represents me in a good way.  Not behave just when he is watched--but always; I'm not a warden or babysitter.  I dislike slutty men.  Sex on the two heads sort.  I don't like men's eyes straying period.  I dislike smokers, drinkers and poppers.  It is a deal breaker if they do illegal drugs, alcoholic and horny slut types.  I am not fond of femme men, even though there are very nice sissie and CD types.  I go more for the masculine.  I dislike hover over type men--men who paw on me, like a cat scratching pole and or a humper.  But, I do like affectionate men, who are laying a cheek on my thigh, hugging my legs (if in slacks) or petting my shoes/heels in my gowns/skirts.  It is a turn on to have men purr when I pet them and show attention.  I like discreet behavior in public but, evident they are lifestyle by following protocols I use. Dislike fence sitters.

Turn offs: Professors, White collar professionals that are in demanding jobs that are more dominant in his life than me, religious employed, politicians, telemarketers, unemployed.

Turn ons: Male Nurses, Male Doctors, EMT, ex-Military and or active military, police, judges, firemen, lawyers, historian buffs (Especially local history), mechanics, aides to politicians.

Respectfully submitted,
Lady Hugs

LaTigresse -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 7:46:08 AM)

I am in total agreement with Cassandra on this one.......I despise stupidity and selfish rudeness.
Also, for me bad personal hygiene is major. If a person stinks I cannot stand being around them, and being an ex-smoker cigarette breath makes me gag. I have a thing about teeth, dirty, rotten or missing teeth just grosses me out. Anyone that is narrowminded or descriminatory based on religioun, income, nationality, politics and especially race will not be in my company long.

As far as turn ons, a great sense of humour, especially confident self depreciating humour, combined with intelligence.....OMG I am such a sucker for that. Someone that really takes the time to listen when they are in a conversation. If they also share my love of nature and furry babies, art, music.....I am drawn to them. I also love to be in the company of someone that is at ease in their own skin and gets along with all sorts of people. A love of travel and new things, sense of adventure, turns me on. I just love feminine women that are also comfy in casual, might get dirty, enviroments also.

CrappyDom -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 7:53:17 AM)

Snobbery
Last boyfriend/dom/whatever was an asshole but you will be better
Anything that smacks of chatrooms and or gor

cloudboy -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 8:51:58 AM)

The greatest turn on for me is someone who can suspend time --- where you enter a zone forgetting about everything else.

A submissive attitude
"submissive eyes" - The way she loks at me
The right perfume
effort in appearance (meaning how hard she tries to look nice for me)
inteligence.

turn offs?
Brattyness (not to be confused with playfulness)
dishonestly - sneaking- hiding things from me
bad breath? lol
lazyness

MsIncognito -> RE: other than looks..what turns you on?or off? (5/5/2006 10:10:34 AM)

Looks don't really turn me on (they're transient anyway) but the one thing that consistently turns me on is pedantry. Go figure
