Well, the only fashion model I know who makes a living doing so was always tall and slender, but seems much more gaunt now.

To be fair, I certainly can't argue with the competitiveness in the industry (which forces plenty of physical alterations, even when not necessary for the purpose).

The body fat percentage of most of those models is below a healthy level so I think the emaciated tag would fit. Throw in the prevalence of eating disorders, I'll stick to my guns.

BMI is generally a decent rule of thumb, but between varying metabolisms and body types, it's not always accurate. Some don't need to do a damn thing to keep the 'look', while others may need to go to physically unhealthy lengths. But then we're talking about poor decisions by individuals, unless we're reverting to the modeling equivalent of the "aggressive video games make kids more aggressive" argument.

While skinny-chick bashing may be "chic" it's still less prevalent than an athletic girl with a developed lower body musculature who is far from fat being called so by people.

I suspect this will be biased, person to person, by anecdotal experience. Personally, I find the 'empowerment' angle of larger women to be a more prominent social fad and tend to see more backlash for anti-fat comments than for anti-skinny comments (particularly the ones often used to bolster the counter-surge against the anti-fat comments).

I just wish the male body would get as much scrutiny as the female one. Unless one looks like an Adonis, it seems reasonable he shouldn't be casting stones at people within a healthy range.

There's a wide range of what can qualify as "healthy" (in current physiological terms), surely. I just see this age's popular culture as more attuned to a classical curvy figure, leading to some borderline thin body-types getting automatically nudged into the "unhealthy" box when they actually aren't.

Let the beautiful-but-emaciated beware: there will be no ultra-skinny models sauntering down the runway at this year's Pasarela Cibeles, Spain's most important fashion event. For the first time, the Pasarela, which begins [an error occurred while processing this directive] Monday, will bar from the catwalk models with a body mass index (a weight-to-height ratio) lower than 18.

Still, the restrictions will prevent an estimated 30% of the 50 models who participated in last year's Cibeles from walking in this year's show.

Ana Carolina Reston Macan was a brizilian model who, at the time of her death, weighed 88 lbs and was 5-8. Her BMI was 13.4. Her death, among many others, caused Spain to come down heavy on the weight issue on runways. Luisel Ramos was another who died of anorexia, with a BMI of 14.5. Below 16 is considered starvation.

I am in no way saying all the models are sick. But almost 1/3 were banned from runway shows for being underweight. Was a time when a full figure meant good health and romance. Twiggy changed all that. Designers are starting, slowly, to bring back larger sized models (god that is such a terrible phrase)

They’re not your average size 2 models and they’re not plus size models either – they’re real size models or normal size models, as in sizes 8-12.

And they’ve finally been incorporated in a fashion show, more precisely, in Mark Fast’s Spring 2010 Fashion Show.

Why did the designer choose them? Here’s the explanation from the creative director of the brand:

“The decision to use fuller girls is something we have been talking about. There’s an idea that only thin and slender women are able to wear Mark’s dresses and he wanted to combat that. We wanted women to know they didn’t have to be a size zero to wear a Mark Fast dress – curvier women can look even better in them.”

On a more important note, what do you guys think of the real-size models initiative? I mean, you’ve got the size 0-4 skinny models dominating the runways, we’ve got the occasional size 12 and up plus-size models as well… I always wonder why we don’t get more of the size 6-12 models, especially since so many women fall in this category? Even more, the majority of the typical skinny models are underweight (not saying that they’re not healthy, because some are naturally skinny) and the plus-size ones are mostly overweight (again – not saying that they’re not healthy, we can’t assume that)…

But it just makes sense that we need more models with healthy BMIs – and sizes 6-12 are a great source for that.

NZ, I will admit that there is little to no backlash for anti-thin sentiments like there is for anti-fat ones. Calling a fat girl a cow will draw gasps from a group whereas telling a skinny girl to eat a sandwich may get a couple of snickers.

And I'm not criticizing thing girls. Thin girls are beautiful as well if they're naturally thin. Working with what nature gave is the best way to utilize one's personal beauty I find. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole... not so much.

I would just like to state that the same rules about metabolism and having to resort to unhealthy measures to get thinner apply to many fat chicks too.......maybe even to the model the OP spoke of.

But, we all judge. Hell, I am a fat chick, and I am guilty of looking at someone way larger than me and thinking how did they get that way? The same look and comments I have received from thinner folks than me.

It is what it is, and it aint gonna change any time soon, I don't think.

Perhaps the lack of "fuller girls" on the runways is because a healthy body weight can equate to a healthy attitude? Why would any healthy woman enter a (cut-throat) profession where they are immediately branded as "fuller" and no doubt criticized for their weight? They are not models...they are "the occasional size 12 and up plus-size models". They stand out negatively because they are not noticeably emaciated.

Starvation has no place, especially on  the runway. It is ugly, and it scars if not kills. There was a noticeable dent made when the fashion industry publicity criticized the emaciated models, yet they renege every statement by countering with "fuller girls".

edited to add..I am not saying that the thin models are not healthy (I want to...but i won't) and i certainly cant make any judgments about the health of the "fuller" girls either.
