As America's middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades -- against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News -- fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canada regulators today announced they would reject efforts by Canada's right wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

The CRTC has withdrawn a controversial proposal that would have given TV and radio stations more leeway to broadcast false or misleading news.

Actually, from what I read about it the other day, the proposal is actually over 10 years old, so it predates Harper.

This is good news, now the problem is getting the conservative Harper government defeated and electing liberals or progressives who will improve the quality of life of Canadian citizens. God help our health care system if these conservatives ever get a majority government.

I guess if huffpo ran a nightly TV news broadcast intended to look like the news broadcasts of the alphabet networks down here, then it, too, would be shut down up there.

But they don't do a nightly newscast that has the look and feel of CBC News.

Stewart/Colbert is probably okay up there, too, as its a satirical comedy show, not an alphabet news broadcast.

Wouldn't it really suck for conservatives if we made the 28th Amendment along the lines that media can not lie? I'm sure Fox News, the GOP, and Tea Party would pour a huge amount of money into removing such a concept. Can't image why....

No Rich, it just means that a news network up here can't just make shit up and broadcast it as "News". They have to actually have some sort of evidence of its veracity. We have no problem with right wing philosophy or viewpoint, nor would we with a news organization with a right-wing slant (two of our major newspaper chains are decidedly right-wing), but we do draw the line at lies and fabrication. We don't need anybody in power to tell us what is true...we just have this odd idea that the facts should back up what a journalist publishes. Time and events may prove those facts to have been erroneous, but that is the nature of the world...but when first presented, the story was backed up by the facts as they were known at the time.
Seems simple really, I cannot understand why many in the US has such a hard time grasping the concept.

Nobody is censoring anything!
There was a proposal to allow news organizations to knowingly broadcast falsehoods. Surely that is not a desirable state of affairs to any but a totalitarian regime. A free press is allowed to make any report they want, as long as they have reason to believe it is true. If they know it isn't, then why on earth should they be allowed to lie to people by claiming it is?
Nobody is telling anybody what they can broadcast, you can broadcast any fucking thing you want, as long as you have good reason to believe it isn't false.

As you may note from today's Supreme Court decision, Arpig, we do free speech differently down here. One government tries to do the best it can for the subjects, the other is restricted by the people, who have denied it certain powers.

I think our way is better, even on the days when it leaves a nasty taste.

And you are obviously ignorant of our laws. We are free to speak our minds. True we have some hate speech laws (which I totally oppose), but they are actually quite narrow. As long as you do not actively foster hatred of any identifiable group you are ok. We have no laws regarding politically correct speech whatsoever. Various organizations (Universities and such) may have policies regarding such things (which I also oppose), but those are not laws.
