A slave is a submissive who identifies as a slave; a submissive is a slave who identifies as a submissive. Six of one/half-a-dozen of the other.

Degree and expanse of submission. If you're new, you'll find that the differentiations are controversial and everyone inevitably applies whatever definition they want anyhow. Consequently, the question has become a catalyst for comedy (which isn't itself bad, but can be confusing for the person asking).

Submissives typically have some say in what goes on in their relationship, slaves have given up that right - and there will always be exceptions to that statement, in that, every one has a different relationship. and there are a lot of people on cm that would take exception to the phrase "the scene" - because they don't feel that what they are living is a scene - its just life.
