Ask yourself one question. What would happen if we allowed the military to collective bargain. They would be a public union since it is funded with taxpayer dollars.

Well the answer should be obvious. Our defense budget would be twice as much as it is now, and they would all have pension plans, not just the people who are allowed to reenlist which is how it is now. Some people mistakenly believe that everyone who joins the military is automatically eligible to retire with them. Not true. They have to continue to recommend you for reenlistement each time, and it is not automatic.

If they were a union though, every single person would be eligible for a pension plan. So I'm thinking the cost of our defense budget would triple.

So how would we finance this? Well there's only two ways. Raise taxes or lay off the military and since taxes are already too high already, we would have to cut the size of our force by at least 50% if not more. This is exactly the same situation that each state is facing in dealing with these public unions.

sophistry at its finest, epic logic failure. (nevermind the inaccuracies and exaggerations)

Isn't interesting that thousands of people are protesting against these moves?

What does that tell you?

Does anyone have any actual number they can stick on these thousands?

The only thing that thousands of people protesting at the state capital tells me is that there are some  retired public union workers receiving fat pension checks that no one else gets, and the rest are calling in sick to protest so they can demand they get theirs in 20 years.

You never cease to amaze me with your hypocrisy.

How many years were you a union member?

Who do you think would take low-paying public jobs if not for the health and pension benefits?

I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself. I am NOT anti-union. I do disagree with illegal union activities. Trashing the state capital is something I never did as a union member. Teachers shutting down entire school districts by calling in sick is wrong anyway you look at it. They are saying screw everyone, except us. It is costing taxpayers here in WI. 3 to 4 million a week for police overtime.

Why do you assume collective bargaining leads to unrealistic wages and benefits? The real data and logic do not support it. Propaganda picks up some exceptional cases and serves them as a common phenomenon. . Public workers do not make outlandish incomes. In fact, they make less than private sector workers doing similar labor (except low-skilled laborers who make living wage under unions but below poverty in private sector).  Where this myth came from?

Because sometimes unions have to resort to sickouts and other such measures when they cannot find compromise.

Breaking the law will not work out well for them in the end. Outside of liberal Madison, the majority fully support Scott Walker. The bums in the capital are getting tired of banging on drums and sleeping on marble floors.

Yet you keep telling me you are not anti-union.

Is it just me or do your words betray you?

I am not going to repeat myself again. There are right ways to do things and wrong ways. Breaking state law is the wrong way and it will backfire in the end.

If this is true then why are they paying dues to belong? Shouldn't they be out in the private sector making more money?

And you think blackmailing the community using the education of the kids is the way to do that?

Is that not how Reagan broke the air traffic controllers union?

By saying they were breaking federal law?

And then we spent years and tons of money to replace them.

It appears, from this article, http://reason.org/news/show/public-sector-private-sector-salary that it isn't a myth that government workers (at least at the federal level) DO make a LOT more than private sector workers.

40% or so is what the article says.

I really don't see why anyone should have to give up their right to collectively bargain concerning their job, or give up their right to work.  We are heading more and more backwards everyday.  And the most unbelievable part about it is...some actually want to!
