Same thing as any sacred idea- people get their noses scuffed when someone doesn't share the same "sacred" ideals and values...then people get their noses scuffed at others thinking they are somehow inferior/superior because they don't happen to share the same "sacred" ideals and values.

The notion that whatever someone else believes or does will somehow affect your own sense of value can lead to a lot of problems.  It's not uncommon for someone to say "I don't care what anyone but my master thinks" and then as soon as some dork comes onto them, they get all huffy because the dork isn't "respecting my relationship."

Some people puff their chest out by defending sacred cows, other people do it by attacking them.

I guess at some points every "cow" should be tested & defended and if in the defense of that sacred thought O/one see's and understands more, the attack might prove to be a valuable teaching tool.

Then again....maybe ya just need to bitch slap the offender.

Some cows like to step on your feet and steal your veggies.

Bad cow.

I think that for everyone, there are some things that are sacred.  To me, the person who shows true understanding is the one who recognizes that their sacred cow is just that...THEIR sacred cow.  Yeah, there are general things that are followed in D/s M/s...the basic structure of the relationship, power exchange, etc.  But some things are up to the individuals involved.  On the BDSM side, the humiliation play I enjoy with submissives might be seen as "normal" by some, "abusive" by others, and to others, "much ado about nothing".  But that is their feeling...not mine.  And they are not in the relationship.  I think there are too many things too quickly labeled abuse and then, given all that is done in the name of BDSM and D/s, it becomes dangerous to do anything.  On the D/s side, I have a tendency to be a "kidder"...not rough or mean, just playful.  I like a submissive who enjoys that and can kid right back.  I have been overheard engaged in this sort of verbal play and have been told by a very indignant dominant that I did not "have my submissive in hand".  And he knew that ... ?

LOL...that is the tricky part!

It depends on how close you get...get close enough, and it's just a piece of warm leather filling your vision.  Not everyone can back off enough to see the big picture....that their particular "cow" is just one out of a whole herd.

My sacred cow is a cannibal, and now has mad cow disease.  Combine that with the retarded Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog that is writing this, and you might want to have your sacred cow graze in another pasture, if you value it.  We don't have much rhyme or reason (Who needs reason????) but we do have a surprisingly efficient lack of respect for others' cows.

Now where's that guy proclaiming the internet has killed "true" BDSM?  Cow and Dog are hungry.

Yours,

benji
