The constant modification of the UK constitution grinds on today; within the next few hours the results of the Welsh referendum are going to be announced....with everyone but everyone predicting a decisive Yes (albeit without a huge turn out for the little publicised issue of constitutional technicality). This means the Welsh Assembly will be able to pass Welsh laws without having them double checked and okayed (or turned down) by the national Parliament, which will result in the first independant Welsh laws in 475 years (de jure, de facto it's arguably more like 700). Perhaps the most current notable distinct Welsh law currently under consideration is about presumtion of organ donation upon death, an opt out system rather than the opt in used currently. Someone doesn't like the rain. They have a few weeks in late july/early august where it don't rain so much, and it's actually quite nice.

He's actually right about that one: as far as anybody can tell, the celtic invaders drove the original population of mainland Britain into Wales, and for some reason chose not to follow them there.

Oh, don't even get me started on those fuckwits in the EDL (who should fuck off back to Normandy and Saxony if they want to bitch about immigration). Dead right about the mongrel nation thing, but supposedly the Welsh were here before anybody else arrived here: supposedly there's some historical evidence for that, and linguists who've done comparisons with cymric think it's a pretty antediluvian language as well, with no real connection to anything more recent arrivals speak.

What I meant was that the Britons....who called themselves Britons, and who the Islands were named after.....were the Welsh.....who were Celts FYI, although things are unclear going back that far.....ie were the celts a separate invading force who drove out the beaker people or was it just assimilation of a more advanced culture.....is it north america changing to western liberalism through conquest or Egypt through internal cultural shift.

What never ceases to amuse me is how the various, peripheral, lesser "prior nations" never tire of trying to re-write history. In any case, it's irrelevant to the matter at hand; the "independent" welsh legislature will be allowed to re-arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic ... right up to the point where they fuck up badly (which they will do, as they always do), after which control will be returned to those with a clue. I do, however, pray that a generation of welsh people are forced to live with the results, in order that we'll finally hear an end to the endless whinging. Fat fucking chance :)

What on earth is wrong with such a law? If you for some incomprehensible reason do not wish to donate your organs upon death you take the minor step of opting out. Clearly if you choose not to opt out then it doesn't matter to you. What is wrong with doing things this way, it makes life simpler for all except the few crackpots who have something against organ donation.
