Then you need to thank Bush.  Think of how it would be if we never invaded Iraq.

It's a loss leader to draw customers into the convenience stores.

Funny thing. The independent outfit where I normally buy (he has about 5 stations in this valley) not only has better prices on gas, the milk is significantly cheaper than at the local grocery store.

We have a corporate-owned convenience/gas station here that is always cheaper on milk too.

But I think it is the same idea, to draw people into the stores and then they make the real money off beer and cigarette sales, Lotto, and cardboard crack.

Their milk tastes strange though, like it is watered down.  I buy it when I don't feel like going to the grocery store but there is a definite difference.

Milk is not cheaper in my area at gas stations.  The only thing that one finds a good price on - is soda.

The last time gas was $3.50 here the economy started slowing right away.
Then when it hit $4.00 everything just stopped! Restaurants were down 40% in business, the malls were down about 25% and I was buying gas 3 or 4 gallons at a time and doing much less driving.
It was like a ghost town here at 8 pm. People just stayed in at night.

When I was a kid in the 60's I worked at a gas station breifly and remember filling up a big Pontiac Catalina and it came out to $7.15 or something like that. I remember thinking, "wow, that's a lot of money to fill up that car!"
There was an older guy "Dave" who worked there about 25 and he had a .38 snubnose revolver and he was always fucking around pointing it at me.
One time two of my friends were across the street giving him the finger and he shot at them! lol They ran behind a barbershop laughing their asses off and ducked around and gave him the finger again, he shot at them again and missed! He couldn't hit shit!
And this was on a fairly crowded intersection about 9 miles north of Boston and noone called the cops.

Like any convenience store, you don't want to buy dog food, hamburger buns or toilet paper there, but I'm talking about the same "best" local brand of milk that is $2.89 at the Qwik-E-Mart and $5.19 at the big chain grocery store. The cigs are also cheaper there.

It's amazing what happens when you don't have an advertising campaign to support.

The station where I get gas is a few cents more but it is ethanol free. I get better mileage so it comes out in My favor. They have the price THEY pay posted (actual invoices) right beside the register. Their markup is 5-8 cents a gallon. sometimes less. They also have a nice little diner in there for breakfast and lunch.

Is it an Indian or Pakistani run store?  They always seem to have the best prices on things like cigarettes.  But you want to practice don't ask don't tell about where they get them from.  For some items they just seem to have these supply lines that appear.

Wrong.
Hamburgers are $1.00, and can (barely) feed one person for one day. There are 100 people and 100 daily hamburgers. Everything is stable, and people are happy, until there are only 97 hamburgers per day.
The ignorant think the new price of hamburgers will be $0.97

Setting aside the intriguing but dangerous subject of how cultures are reflected in various minority run businesses, Flco...

I buy cigarettes because we are addicted to them. If the government is so foolish as to try and tax/regulate that to the point that a black market becomes sustainable and preferably priced, I'm frankly not going to give a shit where he gets them.

if you think those (evil) speculators are just picking money up off the sidewalk, why don't you buy an oil contract?

Funny how there are laws against price gouging at the pumps, but no laws against price gouging via the futures markets.

~chuckles~

I was wondering when someone was going to post about those.

Face it, its part of what started the bubble burst last time.

Katrina started the oil gouging... and our government allowed it to happen... gee.. wonder why.
