But you have to deduct from that the cost of piping water into everywhere once the water tables are ruined extracting that gas.  And of course, then there is the lawsuits from neighboring states - groundwater contamination does not respect state borders, you know.  How do you grow things locally when the water can't be used for irrigation? And thanks to Cheney's 2005 energy bill, those gas companies doing the drilling are exempt from clean water, clean air, and superfund laws. So they won't be paying for mistakes.  PA is the only state that does not enact severance taxes on energy resources, so there are no funds from that for remediation of environmental problem that come from it.

By the time the accountants get done...... well..... you know....

You bring up some very good points.    ...at current they do not tax it.  Which is a mistake.    -- one thing tho- the flow of the info on this seems to be getting out to the average Joe.   Faster then ... past issues have.
