The sticking point is that they use the wrong financial statement.  This guy below is sort of confusing...   CAFR is the one that should be used.

Difficult stuff to export, gas. The transport costs can eat into the profits something rotten.

Researchers at Penn State and the State University of New York at Fredonia estimate that the Marcellus Shale has 50 trillion cubic feet, or 1.4 trillion cubic meters, of recoverable natural gas, roughly twice the amount of natural gas consumed in the United States last year. But government estimates of the amount of gas recoverable from the Marcellus Shale are relatively modest.
