A Pentagon commission is recommending that ground combat units be open to female troops, arguing women are already engaged in combat and that keeping them out of operational career fields puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to promotion.

Don't see that there is an argument to the contrary.  Let them rape and kill just like everybody else.

I always wondered how how a 120lb woman is going to carry/drag a 220lb man out of the line of fire when he has been shot. Plus pack weight. It's not like they have vastly different fitness standards or anything.

Well, the maternaly protective instinct can be ferocious so why not?
And yes, the Israeli Defense Forces have had women in them for decades and they're doing alright.

If they can do an equal job and not be a burden on their fellow soldiers, I have no problem letting them volunteer for it.

They can't. They don't.

The panel made their recommendation because it advanced their social agenda, not because it improved the military.

When I was in the USAF, I weighed 160#, could out bench press at least one guy, out shoot several, and out think many.

The physical fitness standards in the USAF at the time aren't worth mentioning - anyone up on current Army or Marine Corps standards? Are there different standards for different specialties (other than obvious ones like Seals / Special Forces / Green Berets)?

ETA:

The following qualification standards and test procedures are applicable to Marine Corps combat water survival training.

There was a thread on the subject earlier in the year, I think they can text their pushups in now.

Are you saying women should be allowed to have the choice but not be drafted? Only a female warrior by choice?

I see them as "volunteering" when they sign up. Beyond that, it should be by command, as with any man. Sure, then can sign up for combat duty, but to make an exception and say they only have too if they volunteer... just doesnt sit well with me.

What do you feel you would gain if we did, other than what we have now?

Thanks for proving my point. It still remains that the woman who can keep up with the average male combatant is going to be an outlier. AFAIK there is only a different set of standards between men and women in the various armed forces branches. It's a blatant case of sexism that should be rectified.

The ERA had nothing to do with same sex marriage.
