It's is incredible and my heart goes out to them. My brother was on a plane circling to land in Tokyo just minutes bf it hit but thankfully was diverted because of same and he only has to deal with a days delay home from Korea. In a minute the world can change.

My god... I think I failed a test today because this was on my mind so much.... I know/ am acquainted to more than a few people in Japan.... Only a few have actually "checked in"....
To me... the scariest part. after the quake itself, isn't the tsunamis... Is the giant whirlpool that formed off the coast.... I'm not sure where it is... but it just doesn't look natural to me... They are so rare, too (in the ocean. Rivers get them pretty easily)... and this one is a monster.

Assuming this loads properly, you can't even make out the 8.9, or the 7's that served as foreshocks, under all the aftershocks. Note the 6.2 and 6.6's that have hit hundreds of miles away, on the other side of the islands.

If it hasn't loaded properly, you can get an interactive earthquake map of Japan here

Anyone with friends or loved ones, particularly US servicemembers, in Northern Japan may find this of interest.

My new granddaughter doesn't notice the shaking, but my daughter-in-law is a wreck. She is from the Philapines and has never experienced a quake this hard. I told my son if he is worried he can send them both to the states to stay with me until he transfers over next year.
My son was on the ship when the quake occured. He said it felt like they were out at sea.

Latest report: Quake moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet and shifted the Earth's axis...

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

Added to Kirata's post is this: http://www.kmbz.com/Japan-Quake-Causes-Earth-s-Rotation-to-Speed-Up-by/9382982

Does this mean there are no longer 24 hours in a day? Time is still constant, yet the measure of time (a day) is now altered. Just...weird.

The hits just keep on coming. One of the damaged reactors appears to be experiencing a meltdown in the reactor core right now. Cesium is being released into the atmosphere near the plant...

quote:

MINAMISOMA, Japan (AFP) – An explosion and feared meltdown at one of Japan's nuclear plants exposed the scale of the disaster facing Japan after a massive quake and tsunami hit the northeast, leaving more than 1,000 people feared dead. Reactor cooling systems failed at two plants after Friday's record 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit, unleashing a terrifying 10-metre (33-foot) high wave that tore through coastal towns and cities, destroying all in its path. Smoke was seen billowing from the Fukushima No. 1 atomic plant about 250 kilometres (160 miles) northeast of Tokyo after an explosion at the ageing facility destroyed the walls and roof, reports said. The blast reportedly left several workers injured. Kyodo News agency said radioactive caesium had been detected near the site, citing the Japanese nuclear safety commission. Radioactivity rose 20-fold outside, reports said. The plant "may be experiencing nuclear meltdown", Kyodo and Jiji reported while public broadcaster NHK quoted the safety agency as saying metal tubes that contain uranium fuel may have melted.

Oops! Our Bad!!

So, if the pile melts all the way to the center of the Earth from Japan, is it still called the China Syndrome? Or would it be, like, the Brazil Syndrome?

It's nothing new. The length of the day changes constantly. When the planet was first formed, the length of a day was about 6 hours. As a rule, the Earth's rotation is constantly slowing, so we add about 2 milliseconds to the day each century, but every time there's a major earthquake the day is shortened a fraction, so it really jumps around a lot.  Officially, there are  - and will always be - precisely 24 hours in a day, but they just add or subtract a second to official clocks every now and then to keep everything synchronized. It all works out.

CNN now reports that the Japanese government is assuming that 2 of the 3 reactors are melting down at this time, and that the 3rd reactor appears to have failed as well. 130 miles from the world's largest city - almost 40  million people.

Jesus. Words fail me.

What happened and is continuing to happen in Japan is pretty horrible.

There is a lot of confusion about the nuclear reactors though.

Please don't overreact to the reactors though.  Reporters generally know jack squat bout radiation and it's vector.

On another site a person I know as a CDC employee was virtually laughing at some of the reports.  Some of the ngineers were laughing at the reporters misinterpretations of the data.  Some people who speak Japanese were laughing at the confusion of names.  So please keep a calm level about that factor.
