I'm watching it on CNN now. Fires, whole blocks washed away by waves, buildings collapsed. Looks like immense damage!
They said it's the biggest in decades.

They said the earthquake has been upgraded to an 8.9! Also Hawaii is under a tsunami *warning.* First wave expected at 2:59 Hawaii time.

I was just watching it too.
Amazing to see the aerial footage. I can't imagine the loss of life, property and the destruction that will be realized in the days to come. Let's hope another Tsumani doesn't evolve from this.

They just said that there's a Tsunami *watch* for the entire West Coast of the U.S. and up to Alaska and that waves "could" be five feet high.
In Hawaii they're evacuating low lying areas. A "possable" 3 meter Tsunami there! Damn, that's about 8 feet!

Crap. Like we didn't get enough water with all the rain the last couple of months without the Pacific throwing up on us, too... sheesh!

This was given to me by a friend in Cali whom I was concerned about.

I've been watching it on the news too.  They've had dozens of aftershocks the 2 highest registered at 6.8 & 7.4.  If there is a tsunami for the Hawaian Islands, it hits at 8 am est.  About another 5 minutes to go.  At least they've started evacuations and advised tourists to get to the highest floors of the hotels where they're staying.  Good luck and prayers to all involved.

DarkSteven -> RE: HUGE 8.8 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan! (3/11/2011 5:34:25 AM)

Crap.  This one looks like it could hit massively populated areas.

I just read that the hit on Hawaii was insignificant (thank goodness)

I saw footage of the hit on Hawaii, it went further inland than they had thought but wasn't the height expected either.  So in a way, they got off lucky.

This was stronger than the Christchurch earthquake, and Japan hasn't been hit by an earthquake this strong in over 140 yrs.  Then it was a 9.5.

calamitysandra -> RE: HUGE 8.8 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan! (3/11/2011 8:00:14 AM)

A nuclear power plant has been affected by the earthquake. Seems it is only cooled by battery anymore and they are not sure about how long that is going to hold up. The Japanese government has declared a nuclear emergency.

Ive been watching it since six, there arent words powerful enough for me
so many lives just so obliterated in minutes, not just death but total devastation.
Horrible but in the same instance, fascinating to see how it happens
thanks for the links to the videos
