When I hear somebody say "I don't love him/her anymore" all I think is "Because you never did".
What do you all say...

I disagree. On one hand there are people from my past who I still care about and in a way I still love them but it's the same love I feel for other friends who I was never deeply involved with. Do I still love them? Yes. Is it the same love I had when we were together? No.

I no longer love my most recent ex. The love was actually gone before I moved out. Yet, at one time I loved her deeply and intended to spend the rest of my life with her. Now I just don't care about her one way or the other. People think that hate is the opposite of love but it is not - apathy is the opposite of love. I am totally apathetic about her now. If tomorrow she won the lottery or got run over by a truck I wouldn't care either way. At one time I would have sacrificed my own life for hers.

If everything in life was condensed down to some generic "because you never did" yardstick we would live a boring and trivial existence.

In my journal, under the heading ‘note to self’ are the words "To say "I have loved and lost", is to never have loved at all." They express an idea I, whole heartedly, believe; once an individual has an understanding of what love is, that understanding doesn’t go away. So, in that sense, I agree; love is everlasting.

However, love is something you do, so it does not make sense to say “I am in love”, never mind falling out of love, and there are no degrees of love.

I don’t think I would describe it as a rock, either. It’s more like the tides, helping us to move forward with change; constant, but not stationary.
