A car driver's brakes fail.

Is the car driver justified in swerving onto the pavement and killing one person walking down the path, in order to avoid killing 5 people walking across the road?

First he has to interview all 6 and determine which are the most valuable to society.

Cars are to stay on the roads... not ride the sidewalks.

No, they are DDE, Abraham Lincoln, and other assorted socialists, who just now had gained an upright gait after having been thrown under the bus.

Take the foot off the gas and use the emergency ( parking brake in the UK, emergency brake in Germany), brake, non hydraulic for a very good reason.

Cars have no place on the sidewalk, whatever happens the car must stay on the road, the pedestrians on the road can stop or run for it, but what was the car doing going at such a speed that such drastic action is called for when the way ahead is not clear.

Remember, in the UK, green does not mean go, it means one may go, only if the road ahead is clear.

The dilemma you present is, IMO, false....or at the least incomplete.Accepting that there are only 2 options, both of which involve the loss of life absent any other information other than a failure of the brakes is a leap too far.
Given that though the choice is a simple one ...it is one of numbers 1 as opposed to 5.....time to ride the sidewalk.

Gotta hand it to you gentlemen, you're on fucking form tonight eh....humour alive and well in the United States....not subtle, more Benny Hill than Rich Hall...but still, can't knock your commitment to god awful humour that would struggle to get a laugh among a crowd of laugh-starved lunatics.

On the plus side, at least 4 of you would have had absolutely nothing to say worth hearing, which come to think of it is pretty much what you offered anyway. So no change there.

At least 3 of you are wanted in the dems/repubs circus threads that pass, unconvincingly, for political discussion.

So....the OP?

Hint: "Justification" and "accidents" dont have anything to do with each other. The OP is nonsense.

In this case there are only two options.

If you ask a dumb question, you are bound to get a dumb answer. Mine included.

But you give a wealth of dumb opinions, even if not solicited, so I don't see how that squares.

In answer; NG, I don't know it is justified, it is a reasoning, however. And that is as far as I am able to process it.

So, you'd allow the situation to run its course rather than intervene to save 5 people in exchange for 1?

Have you ever really had your brakes fail?

I did once.  I was on route 1 in Maine and it scared the living shit out of Me.

I was scared to death that I would hit a child.

I never got in that car again.

We expect cars to drive and periodically wreck on roads--  we do not expect it on a sidewalk.
