The Bible, as a whole, doesn't endorse anything consistently, except perhaps that one should love God. It is a collection of texts, some written more than a thousand years ago, most more than two thousand, that say all sorts of things, some beautiful, some not. So what? In other news, the sky is still blue.

It is commonly believed that the Bible is a valid source of moral codes and ethical behaviour. A more extreme interpretation of this is that the Bible is the only source of morality. Both perspectives are widely held and promoted today.

It seems perfectly reasonable to me to question whether a text that is at best equivocal about slavery has any relevance as a source of morality or ethics in today's world. It is just as reasonable, it seems to me, to question whether either of the above interpretations is valid and to promote alternative understandings, morals and ethics.

Rule, comments such as the one I have bolded above are offensive and completely unnecessary. If you are stupid enough to hold racist prejudices please keep them to yourself. They are your problem. Deal with them.

Please do not insult the readers of these forums with this type of disgusting racist crap again.

That is but one reason I have rule on ignore.

Quite.

Since I disagree with some of the morality in the Bible, it is not as a whole a valid moral code.

Questioning the text, instead of the people who use it to justify their objectionable behaviors, smacks of an agenda that we've seen before in human history, and which has never done anyone any good.

More reasons why I think ALL RELIGION IS BULLSHIT.  I am so glad to be in the company of others that believe the same like the late George Carlin, Sir Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens (almost the only point of agreement I have with him) and of course Bill Maher.

All paid comediens, except one. LOL. Great base for your beliefs.

To me it is better than basing my beliefs on a book filled with fiction and half-baked allegories.  Then again it is only my opinion, and who knows I could be wrong; though I highly doubt it.

To me, its better not to base my beliefs on either.

But, thats just me.

GotSteel and Kalikshama - thanks for the welcome. :) I figured a religion board would be full of conflict. I enjoy rigorous debates when the happen, and shrug off trolling. But what do you mean about thinking unicorns are real?

Tazzygirl, I have no idea what you studied, but I agree that you don't seem to grasp the difference between a science and a history degree. It's great to know that Louis Pasteur invented the first rabies vaccine using rabbit brain tissue. But if I want to figure out which strain of rabies virus infected a person, I would be better served by learning PCR than reading Pasteur's primary documents about his  research.
And with that, I am done stating the obvious about science education.

I think the original issue - whether this alternative translation is a good idea or not - is interesting because it has happened time and time again throughout history. No religion remains unchanged. What starts off as an oddball idea eventually grows accepted and spurs its own offshoots and mutations.

Belle, I'm using my kindle to access collarme. It almost barely works for that purpose, one issue is that it won't do multiple windows so I can't do things like click on links, sorry.

I meant to add this before the man got frisky.

I hold three degrees. A BS in Business, A BS in Accounting, and a Nursing Degree.

What is your science degree in?

Sorry K you have lost me completely here. Some clarification please.

Are you saying it's out of order to question the text? How else might we understand, interpret or evaluate it without asking questions about its meaning(s)? Without understanding the text, how can we identify those people whose insidious agenda you allude to? What is this dark agenda you referred to?

Same here. It's a Nederlander Jew-hating neo-nazi with maggots crawling around in its brain (or what passes for one). There is nothing it can write that I want to read.

Excellent point. I too find it odd that so many religious ppl are in denial about the very principle and process - evolution - that helped enable their institutions and ideologies in the first place.

This principle can be applied to the fields of ideology, linguistics and culture, as well as its well known application to biology. When things cease adapting to their circumstances, they are effectively guaranteeing their ongoing irrelevance and eventual obsolescence.

Edited to add: welcome to forums! Happy posting! [:D]

Out of curiosity, tweak, are you saying religion hasnt "adapted"?

It's perfectly obvious to me that is neither stated nor implied in my post. So I am unclear about what may have sparked your curiosity in this instance.

lol

I am Dutch, yes.

I do not hate Jews, nor anyone else that I am aware of.

I am not a neo-nazi.

I dunno about the maggots nor about the brain.
