Phoenix....

those camel spiders are 2 feet long!!!  How does something that huge discreetly slip into a suitcase???   I'm not kidding...I think I'd drop dead of a heart attack, right then and there.
"Solifugae is an order of Arachnida, known as camel spiders, wind scorpions or sun spiders, comprising more than 1,000 described species in about 153 genera. They may grow to a length of 19 cm (7.5 in), and have a body comprising an opisthosoma (abdomen) and a prosoma (head) with conspicuously large chelicerae, which are also used for stridulation. Most species live in deserts and feed opportunistically on ground-dwelling arthropods and other animals. A number of urban legends exaggerate the size and speed of Solifugae, and their potential danger to humans." Wiki

Fuck, people are so gullible. Of course, I already knew that. If they weren't the Republican party wouldn't exist.

If your kid tortures cats, be worried.

If your kid opens up roadkill, be worried.

If your kid pulls the legs off of spiders and lets them die...

Buy them lunch.

Hippiekinkster...

I can believe that the majority of them are 7 to 8 inches long, max.
But I saw the photos my friend brought back.  It was a freakin' bathtub, legs went end to end.  And no, it wasn't photoshop, the critter looked very close to the the size of the one in the GI photo.

Take a look at the photo on this thread---there's two camel spiders "connected" (are they fucking? fighting? who knows.)  anyhow, if you see, there's the leg of one of the GI's....         and the body of the camel spider is about from the knee to the boot.  That's easily greater than 8 inches, and I guarantee the legspan is greater than 7.5 on both sides.  So end to end, it's not impossible to have a 2 foot camel spider.

Unusual?  Okay. I"ll buy that.  And I think that photo of the troops in the gulf with the 2 camel spiders has been accepted as "undoctored."  True ? Not true?

Yep, I hafta agree with Haus....those are some atomic nuclear mutant spiders......nothing short of a direct hit from a missle will kill those things......

I'm been looking at the various science websites and it confirms what Hippiekinkster wrote--the larger camel spiders rarely get more than 8 inches.  small comfort!

I have to admit though--that photo just blows my mind.  those are definitely bigger than that.... just crazy!

edited to add:  Ever notice that men do have a habit of exaggerating size?  3 inches is really 7 inches..... 7 inches is really two feet....

Any spider over 1/4" is just plain huge in my book.

needlesandpins -> RE: Let's Talk About Spiders. (3/20/2011 1:59:34 PM)

i have not looked through all this thread. i just can't. i have a HUGE phobia of spiders. anything bigger than a money spider and i've had it. i can not be in the same room with one once i know it's there. i have a hollow living room floor so there is about 18-24" under there and wolf spiders grow under there until they get to be the size of small cats. they then sqeeze themselves out through the gap around my central heating pipes complete with doc martin boots and terrorise me until someone can rescue me.

i have to admit that the web building thing is pretty cool though.

holy crap, I'd move.
My first time seeing a wolf spider was out a camp where I was teaching...my friend and I (she taught ceramics) were in the "kiln" room when a large female wolf spider (about 4") starts heading down the wall.

I remember blurting out "holy shit, it's a tarantula! Kids....RUN!"
We did a rather rapid evacuation of the building, and the nature instructor came over and captured it as a "teaching tool" for his afternoon group.

They told me later she was preggers.  The kids were very excited.  They thought it was awesome.  I got reprimanded for swearing.   It was not a good day.

Did ya know about wolf spiders, that:

It is a common sight to see female wolf spiders in fact sitting in the sun to warm their eggs, which helps them to develop and hatch faster.

Spiders have been around for millions of years. Their population is huge and they are spread all over the world. Wherever you are, you are never more than six feet from a spider.

Gorgeous pics....at least they seemed to be, as I peeked through one half opened eye!

needlesandpins -> RE: Let's Talk About Spiders. (3/20/2011 3:21:18 PM)

when i was younger my room had an air vent that was very old and did not have a proper cover. spiders used to come through it sometimes that my brother would remove for me. one day i was sat watching tv and heard ....tap.....tap tap......tap tap.....tap.... i wondered what it was. well, i had bubble wall paper as opposed to woodchip and there sat on my wall was a massice wolf spider tapping one of the bubbles with a front leg. it was so big that even my brother wouldn't move it. it then ran very quickly down the wall at which point i screamed. my dog heard me and came running upstairs to see who was hurting me. my brother and i got him on my bed and when the spider ran again he killed it. my dog was my hero.

there is talk that showing repeated pictures of spiders in a sequence of pictures that will make you feel good stops you having a fear of them. personally i'm very sceptical about that though.

Which even the site itself mentions is neither deadly not dangerous. In fact, good luck finding one. It's called the Trap Door Spider for a reason. They tend to spend all their time hidden unless goaded out. Just don't go poking your finger into silky holes and all will be fine ;)

Spiders look like something HP Lovecraft would create.  They all look disgustingly evil.  They should just become extinct and be replaced by micro-sized kittens.

From the same website list:
Orb Weaving Spiders

This is a non toxic and non aggressive spider. But, if you step on the webs, it will jump and crawl on you, which may cause you a great heart attack, as it looks deadly. It is very commonly found in gardens, especially during summer.

Many of the spiders listed are neither dangerous nor poisonous.

Exactly...they dont need poison to freak me out. they should exist in an invisible manner, that way they dont freak the ones of us out who are getting freaky about them and are less at danger of getting squashed...win win situation for both [>:]

NocturnalStalker -> RE: Let's Talk About Spiders. (3/20/2011 4:40:08 PM)

Yeah, the lethality an animal has to it is not something that frightens me.  It's all in the visuals.  Due to every arachnid looking like an eldritch abomination, they are all deadly to me by that alone.
