I've always thought of the bison as being THE symbol of the West.  As such, I'm glad they're coming back and reverting to type.  http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_17661145

I did not know about this altruistic behavior. Thank you, DS.

Reminds me of taking a couple of days break in a cross country trip at the
Terry Bison Ranch. You go north on the interstate out of Denver and get off on the last exit before Wyoming.

See the bison,
Eat the bison,
Taste the history...

When we're in Montana we live not far from the National Bison Range.  A yearly trip to see these magnificent animals is a must.  You don't realize how huge they are until you are right next to them.

Agree. Seeing them in Yellowstone still rates as one the best things about visiting the US. That and seeing a bear playing in the snow. Oh and...... never mind there are way too many things to mention.

Right next to them!?!?!? That ain't happening anytime soon! I have a healthy respect for how big they are at a distance...a BIG distance.

Per Wikipedia:

Bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various U.S. and Canadian national parks, and will attack humans if provoked. They appear slow because of their lethargic movements but can easily outrun humans—they have been observed running as fast as 35 miles per hour (56 km/h)[citation needed]. Between 1978 and 1992, nearly five times as many people in Yellowstone National Park were killed or injured by bison as by bears (12 by bears, 56 by bison). Bison are also more agile than one might expect, given their size and body structure.

When I was a teenager my mother used to buy some of our meat from a local farm, and the guy had some bison.  I was privileged to be able to stand just inches from a great big bull...with a 10K volt fence between us.  I can't imagine meeting one of them without something separating us.
