i don't. i was a small child in the sticks when the Wall came down.

This last week i've been writing a paper on the early years of the Cold War, you know, before my parents were born... when my grandparents were small children in the sticks. Well, i feel okay with what i've got for my history class, but when i last reviewed it, i thought it would really add something if i could augment the report with exerts from a song about the time. my problem is that all the songs i know are from the 80's, Sting, Sister of Mercy, Nena, like me.

So, does anyone know a good song about the early Cold War ?

Movies include The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, From Russia with Love, and Dr. Strangelove.  Maybe you might want to look into the FRWL theme music?

Pretty much just after WWII, when Russia said " We don't trust you " to the Americans, and the Americans replied, " We don't trust you either. " .

"We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel is a great one...I think Dylan was referencing the Cold War in "A Hard Rains Gonna Fall" too....

Laughs

If you want research stuff, John Gaddis has an easily read one volume history titled, appropriately, The Cold War.
You also want to read anything you can by George Kennan, especially his Long Telegraph and the subsequent NSC announcements based on it (Kennan is pretty much the guy who invented containment, though it was used very differently than he had envisioned).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_F._Kennan

Also look at stuff on the Hungarian Revolution and the Prague spring.

As far as movies, any Bond flick counts, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is based on the Prague swing, and MASH is set in Korea.
Course, Dr. Strangelove is THE definitive cold war movie-simply untoppable.

Musically, pretty much any 60's hippie anti-war songs can be traced to the Cold War-Think Gimme Shelter. Its about the reaction to Vietnam, which was a war entered into based on the Domino offshoot of the containment theory.

Even better, go Country Joe:

Not sure if it fits within the scope your essay, but here it is for what it's worth

A personal anecedote:

In 1957 (when I was 7 years old and in 1st grade) I distinctly remember having nuclear bomb drills.  Like fire drills, there was a siren school-wide.  We were taught to grab a schoolbook, hold it over our heads and duck under our desks.  Laughable now that we understand the extent of distructuction.  The purpose, I'm sure, was more to let us know there was something to "do" instead of panic.

I also remember, a few years later, having a field trip to a nuclear power plant (located west of Chicago) were we saw a movie about how "friendly and clean" nuclear power was.  The main motif was the traditional three-ringed atom with a similey face.  We did NOT get a tour of the plant.

One song from the late 1960s that you might find interesting, if not informative, would be "Back in the USSR" by the Beatles.  It was written as a parody of the songs "California Girls" by the Beach Boys, and "Back in the USA" by Chuck Berry.  The song itself might not be too much help, but the story behind the song could be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_in_the_USSR

Paul McCartney said this in an interview in 1984:

I wrote that as a kind of Beach Boys parody. And "Back in the USA" was a Chuck Berry song, so it kinda took off from there. I just liked the idea of Georgia girls and talking about places like the Ukraine as if they were California, you know? It was also hands across the water, which I'm still conscious of. 'Cause they like us out there, even though the bosses in the Kremlin may not. The kids do. And that to me is very important for the future of the race.

FRWL ?

So very iconic, Steven felt that all knew (except he missed some younger readers) that FRWL = From Russia With Love.

The second half of A General's Life, the autobiography of General Omar Bradley, is all about the Cold War. It's absolutely fascinating. For instance they had all these plans and strategies in response to a possible Soviet incursion into Europe, but had nowhere near the amount of troops necessary to accomplish any of them, because of Truman's obsession with cutting the armed forces to reduce government spending.

The Coldest Winter, by David Halberstam, and The Forgotten War, by Clay Blair, are both about Korea, and do a great job delving into the overall politics of the Cold War.

Yeah, I remember it clearly. I would recommend two movies.

1) Failsafe, an interesting brink of Armageddon drama about the crew of a B-58 ordered to drop their bomb on Russia. (It doesn't hurt that there is lots of footage of Hustlers in flight...sexy ass plane that).
http://www.amazon.com/Fail-Safe/dp/B00455F05Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1301246715&sr=1-1

2)The Atomic Cafe. A superb film about just the period you are talking about. Its not a narrative film, more of a series of clips, with little commentary...the clips speak for themselves. I recommend this film to everybody, but especially for you FF.
No instant video for this one, sorry: http://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Cafe-Paul-Tibbets/dp/B000060MW1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301246809&sr=1-1-catcorr

I clearly remember the Cuban missile crisis, and nuclear fallout drills. When Kennedy ordered the blockade, I remember all the parents in the neighborhood making plans on what they would do if the response were a launch. I think the threat of nuclear war and being drafted and sent to Vietnam was the underlying cause of the counter culture revolution of the late 60's-70's.

The Cold War summed up:

Needs more bloodshed.
