O'k, lets put the "Old Guard" jokes to rest. While the individual who started the 7 day honor thing was being quite arrogant and I gave one of several back handed responses to it. Let us understand what we're talking about. (Make whatever comments you desire after understanding how wrong we all have been....including the arrogance of myself and the OP.) The "Old Guard" is a U.S. Army regiment that is a tremendous honor to get assigned to. It is a parade regiment that performs honors services at the most sacred of the U.S. military's ceremonies. On a daily basis, they guard the Tomb of the Unknowns and provide the honor guard to the bodies of soldiers who have earned the privilege to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. They provide full military honors to a great many ceremonies beyond these. While they are a "parade" unit, the "Old Guard" doesn't consist of "parade soldiers"....these are soldiers who have proven themselves to be exceptional and have earned the privilege of serving in the regiment. The duty of honoring our nation's fallen is not taken lightly by their families nor their comrades and these men are tasked with honoring that. Those with highest honors are given ceremonies by the Old Guard. When you go to a local funeral with full military honors, there is an honor guard. That honor guard is not comprised of members of the Old Guard, but an all volunteer group and they don't get paid for it. (This is not because the Old Guard doesn't respect them, but simply because there are too many veterans for the Old Guard to attend every funeral.) They do it to honor a comrade they have never known. If you ever attend a funeral with full military honors, I ask that you do one thing. Shake the hands and say thank you to each member of the honor guard before the ceremony. It's not expected of civilians (and I'm saddened by how many veterans don't), but it really does let them know that you think a lot of them.

I was at a munch a few days ago where a panel of old leather folk was trying to pitch this company line. I had to bite my tongue to keep from just drilling them. Just another way of shouting how right their way was and how every one else does things wrong. What an F'ing crock. I dunno bout old school, but Reagan was prez when I whipped my first chick. I can't speak to what old guard means in the military since I was speaking of bdsm OG. Old Guard was started by a group of gay black man that served in the World War and found the lifestyle in Europe. They came back here to the US and continued forming a BDSM based on a sort of military order structure. You started as a sub and learned to serve until you earned your leather, this is also one of the start of the leatherman. I doubt that most of the answers here were either done with honor or with any real knowledge. Oh and before the net people did know more then just bedroom M/s. Though at the moment it seems that it is just easier to be like children that think they know it all. If that sound like a person that understands more then chatroom D/s it is because I do. Russell

You know, Jill Carter is widely recognized as a person extremely knowledgable of the black leather community, being that she is a woman of color and has about 40 years experience within the black leather community. While she states, (common knowledge, here) that the leather community was created by 'gay bikers returning from WWII', she also states (I'm quoting her verbatim), "scant evidence exists regarding the history of people of color within the early stages of the leather community." I suppose it is true, "you learn something new everyday."

Russell Excuse My french, but bullshit. You're not the only person on these boards who was involved in M/s before they were on the net. I've got no problem respecting those who are senior leathermen than Me, but that doesn't mean that I'm not going to stand up and tell someone when they are trying to pull the high and mighty crap. Yes, there was a time that a person could only earn their leathers if they fit into certain categories. They did have to serve under someone else first. Yes, they had to be men. That was sixty years ago. Times have changed since sixty years ago and there isn't a soul on these boards (that I'm aware of) who has been doing wiitwd that long. If you have, you look damn good for eighty. If you actually preferred the days that straight people couldn't adopt a leather lifestyle or that the only Masters were men, I'm more than happy to tell you that you can have it. Thankfully, I don't run into such attitudes in the leather community and I am afforded the same respect as any other person who has their place in it. If we were present during the inception and eventual conception of what is termed “Old Guard’ we could speak with some measure of knowledge and authority, of course we would be somewhere in our mid 80’s to early 90’s and our memory most likely would be a bit dim. I question the value in discussing what we don’t actually know or can prove?
