http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/education/ct-met-school-lunch-restrictions-041120110410,0,4567867.story

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

Amazing!

Of course, what do the students or parents know?

And was there an epidemic of kids bring "cokes" to school?

OH WAIT.... now I see "
Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district's food provider, Chartwells-Thompson. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch
." I wonder what the kick-back to the principals and the school administrators are?

Lucy,

Lugging around text books will soon be a think of the past. Many US school districts are buying Kindles(sp?) and other such devices too. It's the wave of the future and likely a good idea but that's another thread.

This is insane. I can't believe the parents in that district are allowing this crap. They ought to throw that idiot principal out on the street.

Just pointing out madness in general Mike,
lol that would be one hell of a money drain wouldnt it? but then nothing surprises me any more.
FDD, I could agree with kindles, but IPads nah
As far as lunches go...
I spent twelve years having school lunches, but even back then there was many concerns and now its concerns going back to where it was, for the same reasons, the pendulum swinging back t shoudl settle near the middle but who knows with some stupid ideas people have

Well, they are apples, after all, thus healthy...

The newest generation of Kindles are practically the same as an I-Pod.

Kids will have to be able to access the net and chatting with teachers and tutors will be done too.

No more books... at least as we knew them growing up.

Both my kids went to a magnet school in Chgo for grammar school. To say the school lunches were bad is an understatement. My son (who eats everything) wouldn't eat them. One day in kindergarten he came home from school and I asked him what he had for lunch. He said,  "I don't know, it was brown and triangular, I think it was meat." (I'm not kidding.) To classify their food as healthy is laughable.

My daughter is a picky eater and always took her lunch. She would much rather starve all day than eat food she doesn't like.

I feel very bad for the parents and the kids in that school. My kid not eating all day would stress me.

In many public schools mere in Milwaukee the kids get breakfast and lunch. I'm sure dinner won't be far behind. Then you hear, ' our budget is cut to the bone'.

There is also a huge difference in the price, and fixing them, replacing them, without a doubt in  little five year old hands, that is going to be a constant cost.
I could totally agree with  kindles
having had 3 kids with variations of segas, nintendo's xboxs etc etc Im being realistic with the damage that can be done in a short period of time

Pstttt FDD I was trying to keep it on topic ....
When you have kids with allergies, religious requirements, one or two  parents working all day, kids making their own lunches is a very real phenom, the right and wrong of it is being able to cater to all of them, kids need food, they need breakfast, they need lunch, to make rules for one or the other and not all is very very shortsighted

This is just me spitballing here....but I'm wondering what the median income might be in some of those districts, and though I doubt dinners will be on the menu anytime soon,it does occur to me,but I am sure not you, that for some of those kids...these are the only nutritious meals they are likely to get.
Not that that would be a concern for you

I think its should be mandatory for the quality of the school administered lunches to be raised if there is going to be a change made to this degree.

Personal experience- when i moved to the states and began grade 1...1996 if i do remember correctly- the school lunches were unmistakably real food, quiet good since i was THE most snobbish eater ever, and unapologetically still am. I think around grade 8, which again if i remember correctly, was in 2003- is where public school lunches become VERY iffy. Just...squares of things that slightly reassemble food products. I distinctly remember "pizza" that looked like pale cardboard with tomato and cheese-like stuff on top.

From then, until i finished high school, i didn't eat lunch that the school provided. I'd eat a lot during breakfast at home or at school (which was just basic prepackaged foods like cereal and granola, with cartons of milk and fresh fruit (surprisingly).

I was a bit on the slender side in high school as a result.

Maybe some of these parents should quit spending money on flat screen TVs and cell phones and start supporting their families instead of expecting the federal govt to feed their kids.

Maybe they should spend 'their' money feeding their kids. We all have priorities. This should be number one, but all so often it isn't. It's to easy to rely on others.

Walk through any public school in a rich or poor district. These kids all have cells. In Milwaukee they use them to get reinforcements when there is a fight in the school.
