These would be 2 of the posts that lead me to believe that you were still reacting to the posted article.

That said, please point out where the article said that atheists are more intelligent than theists, or that theists are stupid. It isn't there; but that did not stop boi from claiming that it was, nor you from intimating that it was.

I honestly think that both of you read much into the opinion piece that was either not there at all, or not meant the way you took it. As for one of the authors referencing his own work, why wouldn't he? It is, again, an opinion piece, not a scientific article submitted for peer review. Don't most people draw from their own experiences when writing their opinions?

The article....

As individuals, atheists tend to score high on measures of intelligence, especially verbal ability and scientific literacy

The link contained within the article...

Evidence is reviewed pointing to a negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief in the United States and Europe. It is shown that intelligence measured as psychometricg is negatively related to religious belief. We also examine whether this negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief is present between nations. Wefind that in a sample of 137 countries the correlation between national IQ and disbelief in God is 0.60.

Yep, if you are religious, you will be a murderer.

Yet another example of overreacting to something that seems to have offended you. The authors never said that

Consider that at the societal level, murder rates are far lower in secularized nations such as Japan or Sweden than they are in the much more religious United States, which also has a much greater portion of its population in prison. Even within this country, those states with the highest levels of church attendance, such as Louisiana and Mississippi, have significantly higher murder rates than far less religious states such as Vermont and Oregon.

To use the word you used... intimating.

To use my own, they said it.

quote:

issues such as governmental use of torture, the death penalty, punitive hitting of children, racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, environmental degradation or human rights — the irreligious tend to be more ethical than their religious peers, particularly compared with those who describe themselves as very religious.

As someone who I know disagrees with the religious right and often clashes with them on exactly the above issues, do you really disagree with this?
Nowhere does it say all religious people, or even any religious people are immoral. Political party wasn't addressed anywhere that I can see, but the results of such a study might be pretty spectacular.

Its back to the "us" vs "them" I see atheists complain about how the religious place themselves above the nonreligious... yet its the exact same thing this opinion piece did... placing themselves above the religious.

I thought this a perfect spot to share a sentiment my brother and his wife posted on facebook this morning.... lol

quote:

So... Bin Laden is standing before God waiting to hear his punishment, when God gets a tap on the shoulder. There behind him stand 343 firemen, 72 police officers, one K9 officer, 3,000 American citizens & over 5,000 Soldiers. "Don't worry God, we got this!!!"

If I ever wanted to believe in an afterlife... this would be why.

I think that between believing in God makes no difference to your ethics or opinions, what I find scaring, is the tendency to agree to the majority and just believe everything that's said by government and newspapers.

Critisism and curiosity isnt supported neither stimulated anymore....

I'm not the one to make a judgement over OBL, but I think at least, he had to be tried, guilty or guilty as hell. But this way people are going to make their own believes and with some fanatics, there will be more violence now.

But the discussion was: Religion vs Evolution? Or am I mistaken somewhere??

I remember that thread. That is where you claimed "
I have been objecting to making any ONE EXCLUSIVE RELIGION COMPULSORY to people whose minds are not formed enough or healthy enough to make a free informed decision on such matters." but never came back and explained where exactly this was happening.

Why do Believers persist in believing that non-belief is a belief?

quote:

ORIGINAL: Hippiekinkster
[...] the vast majority of theists that I encounter in such discussions consider Atheism a "belief" or "belief system". I simply don't understand this position at all.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Hippiekinkster
I do not at all see my Atheism as a "belief". I don't "believe" that no gods exist; there are no gods. It is that simple. Atheism is not a belief system and I wish theists could grasp that very simple fact.

Agreed that atheism is not a religious belief, much less a belief system:  Theists believe in God.  But it's absurd to say that Atheists believe in "there's not a God." However, using the term belief in its more generic (i.e., non-religious) sense of holding a particular proposition to be, or likely to be, true, I think it's fair to say that theists believe (the proposition) that there is a God while atheists believe (the proposition) that there is none.  (And belief doesn't necessarily entail evidence.)  Put another way, atheism is, or is akin to, a belief about religion.

If Materialists would call themselves Materialists instead of "Atheists," I think the lines between the two would be more clearly drawn.

An astute distinction that adds some real clarity to this debate.  Thanks Kirata!

I take a Buddhist view on this one: Asking whether or not God exists is not a "skillful question." But I'll go so far as to say that when you use the word "God" you have something in mind that you mean by that, and judging from your comments I would be willing to bet that if I knew what it was I would agree that it doesn't exist.

Incidentally, if there isn't a drink called a "Pink Unicorn" there should be, though I don't think it sounds like something I'd be likely to mix up for myself. Settle for a margarita?

This is a perfect example of what religion is for - to make people feel better about things that they have no control over.

Oh please, this again.

The pattern:

Antagonization with nothing useful or any good purpose to the discussion at all; being called out on BS; response is inevitably "I was just joking," backpedaling  fiercely.

I did not say I was joking.... What I posted was a joke.... Then again, you do seem to have problems with the written word.
