$6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting Americans squarely in the gas tank, and one economist thinks it could drive prices as high as $6 a gallon or more by summertime under the right conditions./snip

Silver   $46.11

It will happen only if the speculators keep throwing more money into oil futures. This will soon end as Goldman-Sachs already announced they are adding no more commodities to their portfolio. A huge player to be leaving the game. This will discourage the rest of the mob.

Ok look...one more thing. Currencies as reflected in a currency index is merely the same speculation, different commodity. So the idea that there is something say a policy or a law of finance, demand or supply that would have me change something because of how these two sets of speculators compare...is ridiculous.

This is what happens when the profits from financial speculation on commodities contracts becomes high enough to degrade or reduce the performance (draws capital away) of the normal marketplace of meeting demand for goods and real services...instead of paper.

People are buying less now that prices are around $3.60 here.
The last time it hit $4.00 the economy in this area fell off a cliff! Restarants were down 40%!
I was out one night at about 8 and it was like a ghost town, you'd have thought it was 4 in the morning.
I bought 5 gallons at a time then. When people buy and use a lot less gasoline it backs up in "the pipeline" and prices tend to drop very quickly.
Would you want to be *buying* silver at $46.11? Or selling it?
I think gold is in an extreme bubble. I certainly wouldn't pay $1,500 for it!
You know what happens to bubbles.

Which is why trhe one day boycotts dont work... or boycotting a particular supplier, like BP. They sell to each other, they buy from each other and shift the supply to where its needed. The only way to drop prices is to reduce overall demand, which is what happened in 2007 - 08

Tazzy, true, that's why I tell people when gas is high to only fill your tank halfway. Why "store" gas for the big oil cos?
If you have only 100,000 people doing that in a certain area that's a lot of gas that is put back into the pipeline.
And, that's money you're, "holding back" from the oil cos. It's a very effective tactic!

Which is why public transit makes so much sense. Though, as I recall, unless its changed a whole lot the bus system in MB was for shit.

Problem is, it has to be country wide. A certain area sees a drop, they just sell it to other areas.

FR -

This just in - Obama, now seeking reelection, has announced that he wont rest until his newly formed committee finds the real culprit behind high gas prices:

Global Warming cultists must be happier than the Grinch who stole Christmas:

quote:

No break this spring at the gas pump

With gas prices above $4 in some states, Americans are canceling spring break plans and rethinking summer vacation, and some tourist destinations are offering gas vouchers of as much as $50 to talk people out of giving up and staying home.

At Mount Rushmore, only about 37,000 people decided in March that seeing the four granite-etched presidential sculptures was worth the trip, down from about 43,000 a year before.

At the Grand Canyon, a marketing executive for one company that offers sweeping helicopter vistas says 10 percent fewer people than last year are driving up and booking tours. The company is counting on international tourists to make up the rest. And along the Rhode Island coast, where 800,000 people a year show up to gawk at the opulence of Gilded Age mansions, it's even worse — business is off 30 percent just since the beginning of March.

Memorial Day is still five weeks away, and summer doesn't officially start for two months. This year, anxiety over high gas prices — and whether the family vacation will bust the family budget — has come early.

"I can't go anywhere because I can't afford it," said Greg Sensing, who works in admissions for the University of Maryland. "It's kind of nice to take a road trip, to get in the car, you see the country, and now why bother doing it?"

Hillwilliam -> RE: $6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting (4/21/2011 6:26:09 PM)

Let's see if I got this straight. If someone wants to drive 2000 miles (1000 each way) for a week's vacation (more than typical) their vehicle gets 20 MPG on the highway (that is kinda low even for a modern SUV) and gas is a full dollar more/gallon.

That means that they are willing to totally cancel travel plans because that week for the whole family will cost an extra hundred bucks.

Do the math folks. There are a few possibilities.

1. The person wrote the article as a hatchet job.

2. People are trying to live beyond their means (they need to cancel any way and concentrate on basic necessities).

3. They and the folks accepting this as gospel are just morons.

If you were in charge of things only rich peoples kids would get to explore a rain forest, or frolic on an ocean beach, get to hike along a breathtaking mountain ridge?

That would be sad...

And you need to check your facts because gas is up a lot more than "just" a dollar. In fact everything is more on account of fuel prices, and despite what you seem to think people are being adversely affected, the whole economy is.

Lets just hope things dont get too much worse, and vote out the enviro whackos.

tazzygirl -> RE: $6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting (4/21/2011 8:21:28 PM)

And when your budget doesnt allow for a frolic on the beach, you dont go. Vacations are a luxury. Not everyone can afford one away from home.

I bought a few more pieces today.   In over night trading the price has dropped to $46.50.

I wish it would pop the bubble to $9 again.

Silver is still cheaper then it has ever been.   Some of the guys will sell at $133.  But I think the $700-$6000 per ounce  range is more realistic.  (particularly when you factor gold at $56,000 an ounce.) Why?   Only 2% of Americans even own precious metals.   The run up will be more extreme then 1980-=  because India and China will be on board this time. The total silver market is a few billion.   We print trillions now- so it is very small.

Silver is the only commodity cheaper then it was in 1980=-  factor in inflation - that should have accrued and $133 is the new $50.

The dollar can do what it wants... there is no fat finger flash crash-  on a physical stack.

Of course-  the bulk of people think we have green shoots and that PMs are a bubble.   Those same people will say gold is an outdated relic.

Historically-  500 oz silver  or 40 oz of gold is an average family house- paid in full.  So that is what we are in for.   So even if silver is $100 an ounce-  it has not normalized until 500 oz trades for a house--  via its historical true value.

BTW-  sellers on ebay been ignoring spot price.  The mark ups are higher then I can recall in the past.

Why would I like fuel prices... Sanity, honestly, you arent making sense. I didnt cause high fuel prices. The market and oil companies caused this.

Sanity -> RE: $6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting (4/22/2011 6:29:32 AM)

Well then whats your point about vacations, of course not everyone can afford one.

Youre the one who isnt making any sense tazzy girl.

tazzygirl -> RE: $6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting (4/22/2011 6:49:08 AM)

Because you try and make it sound like liberals are enjoying this... hell.. we are taking a hit as well, Sanity. But, when it comes down to a decision about traveling across country, or traveling within your own state, the choice should be damn simple.

We, as a country, have gotten far too used to zipping off to a resort. A few google searches and Im sure most people can find a nice place to "vaca" within a few hours of their home.

Sanity -> RE: $6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting (4/22/2011 7:12:27 AM)

Well yeah, taz, you make my point with statements such as these.

Leftists such as yourself are obviously resentful towards those others who enjoy their vehicles any more than you think they should, and when you deny it you are backtracking on many of the other things that you write.

Those who enjoy their vehicles will soon be paying what the rest of the free world pays for gas, and those that don't enjoy their vehicles will also have to follow suit.
