The only thing that keeps my small town running are tickets given out by the local police.

^ Cops patrol the trouble spots. A real live person gives the ticket- and certainly a good many deserve the ticket. However- locally- the cops do not harass/entrap people- law enforcement is not meant to balance the budget here. I do not like the cams- and if I visit such an area- I will simply remove my plate.

Here is my prob with the cameras (3 actually) 1. No due process. The owner of the car pays a fine whether he was driving or not (at least here). I don't have a prob paying for my mistakes but not those of others. If someone else is driving my car, why should I pay their tickets? That's liberal thinking. "someone made a mistake. It might have been you or maybe it wasn't but you pay. They say you can get them dismissed. That is BS. we had a guy who proved, by showing the police report, that his car was stolen before it ran a light. the sheriff even got involved. He finally paid up after a collection agency hurt his credit. It just wasn't worth $100. this guy was a victim twice. Once when his car was stolen and then when he was extorted. 2. The cameras don't treat everyone the same. If you just bought your car and have a temp tag, you get away scot free. Same for folks who drive with stolen tags (more than you would realize) or who have tags obscured by mud or snow. 3. They take the mark 1 mod 0 eyeball out of the equation. I dare you to be able to read your newspaper and not find a story about a routine traffic stop that turns into an arrest for DUI, wanted felon, drugs, stolen property or etc. In the OP, how many of those drivers do you think were drunk off their ass? I'd bet a very high percentage. The ones who weren't involved in collisions went home, slept it off and when they got the ticket in the mail I bet they said "Holy SHIT I'm glad that wasn't a cop" The more cameras there are, the fewer police are involved in traffic stops and the more drunk drivers will drink again to maybe kill next time.

Some very scary footage there. I wish we had those cameras in the smallish town where I live. Here red light violators are tolerated. So much so most lights are timed so people can run the red and the opposing traffic is on hold for 5-10 seconds so the intersection can clear. I kind you not. Of course, it's a college town with a high percentage of young drivers and international drivers that really shouldn't be behind the wheel. When I first moved here this really confused me, as I'd spent 20 years previous to that driving in Chgo. Red light scofflaws got much less tolerance there, and the burbs tended to have the police power (w/o the violent crime) to enforce these violations. The video plainly shows how dangerous this practice is, I thought. Those who don't like the cameras would be taking a whole other view if you had a loved one killed b/c someone ignored the red light and caused a fatal accident. As always, JMO

Biggest problem with the red light cams here is that the fine is not enough of a deterrent, only $50 and no points on the license since the violation goes against the registered owner of the vehicle and not the driver. Bump that up to the same fine as a stop by the PD and there will be a lot more respect for the red lights, and/or a lot more conversations between parents and children or spouses on their driving habits. And if the cams at a specific intersection have done their job so well as to no longer be issuing tickets on a routine basis, leave dummy cams up in their place to keep up appearances, and move them to an intersection known to need the coverage.

Here in the Los Angeles area they do say the cameras cause more accidents at rush hour as many people stop short and too fast (fearing a ticket when the light is almost turning red) and thus others hit them from behind and they have taken some of them out at certain intersections for this reason but maybe they just shouldn't use them at rush hour.... At least most of these accidents don't cause major injury or fatalities.

Actually, one of the articles Kirata posted had some good information on how to lessen the red light running. According to it, most are run by those who are distracted and don't notice the light.

It has been said that Californians would follow each other off a cliff. Rear ending someone who stops at a red light ? It has also been said that you can't maintain proper following distance in California because everybody passes you and zips in ahead, and you end up standing still. There is no excuse for running head on into something that is sitting there. There is no excuse for not watching the lights and signs. I still think seat belts and airbags should be illegal. However car doors should be made the toughest part of the car. Also some pointy things on the dashboard to impale the driver would help. That way if someone hits you, you are safe, if you hit someone you get hurt bad. Give it two years and there will be practically no traffic accidents. Ain't talkin' bout tough love, my tough love is rotten to the core. It's simple really. You take the consequences out of doing stupid shit, what do you think happens (happened) ? People do more stupid shit. I get a car with air bags the first thing I do is disconnect them. Might as well cut the seatbelts out as well. Know why ? I DON'T HIT SHIT ! I don't hit shit - who would've ever thunk of it ? T^T

Just yesterday, I had a visit from an insurance adjuster who came to look at damages to my car. On Friday the 15th, I was waiting to make a left turn when a guy coming towards me on the inside lane (it was a 5-lane street) ran the light, and was T-boned. The offender streaked past me riding up on two wheels. My car got sprayed with debris. Its a camera intersection, and what grabbed my attention was the in-my-face flash from the camera when the guy ran the light. I was listed in the police report as 1 of 3 witnesses. When I stopped on Monday at the police station to get a copy of the accident report, I had to be very specific about the time. The lady at the window told me there were 3 accidents at that specific camera-equipped intersection on that Friday, and I needed to narrow down the time for her. Safer? Nah....
