Some people I have heard called trolls around here are some of my all time favorites posters. Some of you non-trolls bore me to smithereens.

Some of you think you are funny and clever but I dont. I sail past most of the thread/s looking for some morsel of chewy post.

Some of you are really funny and clever and will read whatever passes my eyes that you write cuz I lerv ya's!

Who gets to decide who's a troll?

Don't get me wrong, i know what you're saying. i've seen threads where it's like people crowding around an accident scene, waiting for something juicy. But i've also seen the term "troll" thrown out when it wasn't deserved, to refer to anybody who says something that the majority don't agree with. i've seen people jump to conclusions too quickly and hijack a thread that deserved to be taken seriously. That's not always the case, but it happens. i think sometimes people are too quick to judge "trolls".

But, yes. If you think someone's a troll, just don't post to their thread. That's much better than posting just to tell them you think they're a troll.

pam

Fair point, but there are also cases where it it blatantly obvious that people are here just to stir crud.  If a person comes to a BDSM website just to say how everyone needs therapy for being interested in wiitwd or how all sadistic males are really just abusive pricks using this as a cover, I kind of expect them to get nailed.

I've been pondering this weighty subject for days....well, maybe like minutes.

Since mature trolls live under bridges (it's but evil rumor that they live in their mother's basement)...would you start them out in small PVC pipes or drainage tiles as seedlings?  As they grow you could transplant them to empty oil drums, sewage pipes, etc. until they are fit for bridge duty.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: The Care and Feeding of Trolls (4/29/2011 10:11:00 PM)

As you know, helen, I spend my quality time here on the P&R forum. There are several posters who consistently offer up something for me to think about, such as Tweakabelle, Edwynn, NorthernGent, and several others. I enjoy reading their offerings. There are a few minor-league trolls, who occassionally post something besides partisan drivel. And then there are the four or five major-league trolls, who don't post seeking an actual discussion. They post for the sole purpose of, well, trolling. I have 3 of them on hide.

I have asked other forumites why they bother to respond to them, and they claim that they do so on the off chance that the trolls might actually be swayed by their arguments. Studies consistently show that such is not the case ( "Fact-Free Nation" is a good place to start ). Trolls are typically ideologues (an ideology need not be political) who "suffer" from extreme confirmation bias, and who reject out-of-hand any data which conflicts with their Weltanschauung. It has been pointed out to the troll-responders that their activities are futile, but they persist. It's some sort of bizarre pathology, IMO. If you observe the P&R forum long enough, the actors as well as the patterns reveal themselves. And, unfortunately for the observers, responding to the trolls only encourages them. A cliche, perhaps, but true nevertheless. Case in point: that 50 page BM thread. Those who respond to such obvious trolling are like little kids who have absolutely no self-control.

I cannot speak to the other forums, but I have read some who state that they avoid the P&R forum because of the mind-numbingly moronic depths the troll-threads descend to (I'll try and restrain myself from calling most of the tripe on many of the other forums mind-numbingly banal [8D] ). That is unfortunate, because they may have much to offer.

i try not to have a problem when such people get nailed. i try to remind myself that it's the internet, which means that *everyone* is entitled to their opinion, and that the right to express a controversial opinion is NOT limited to the OP. Everyone else is just as entitled to express their opinion about the OP's opinion. i don't always succeed, but i try to keep in mind that some people are just asking for it, and it's no surprise when they get it. Well, i try, anyway.

i don't really have a problem with an offensive or stupid OP getting nailed. i think that the overwhelming majority of comments are fair. However it does bug me (yes, so help me, it does) when the question of whether involvement in BDSM is unhealthy and indicates the need for therapy, or whether the majority of people in poly relationships *shouldn't* be, or people's opinions about financial domination... it bugs me that there are certain subjects that posters just won't take seriously.

i understand that many times the OPs of those threads are just whining, and they that expect everyone to validate their views and agree with them, and then they're offended when it doesn't happen. i understand that it's unreasonable to expect forum members to be nice and fair and polite to a person whose being whiney and stupid. If that is the case, then have at them.

But i don't understand why the question of whether or not participation in BDSM is evidence of some kind of pathology, for example; why that question can't be asked in such a way as to merit serious consideration. Why most posters seem to just *assume* that the OP is a troll, and so it's okay not to take the thread seriously. Like i said, i understand that many times the OP's own behavior is the reason why they're not taken seriously. That is most often the reason why people get nailed. But occasionally, occasionally, it's not. On a question like that, i know how *i* would answer. But, depending on how thoughtfully the question was asked, i might also think it was a valid question.

i'm not thinking of any particular thread or poster when i say that. And i understand that this is the internet, not church, and people will be, well, *people* and not saints. But i have sometimes seen a kind of gang mentality develop when someone is perceived as a "troll", and it's sad when that interferes with what might otherwise have been an interesting debate. Like i said, it doesn't always happen, or even usually happen. But occasionally, it happens. Personally i think labeling an OP as a troll and hijacking their thread- i think *that* is usually far more disrespectful than anything the OP did. And i say, if you (generalized "you") think the OP is a troll, just don't post on the thread. But to post only to deliberately ignore the topic and take the thread in a new direction- to me, *that* is trolling.

Another poster said it best:
quote:

ORIGINAL: imperatrixx
"tacit groupthink that enjoys batting around the op" is called trolling.

an op who posts retarded shit isn't a troll. unless he's being trollbait and trying to get trolls to respond. then he is a troll trolling trolls.

If the OP asks for it, then by all means dish it out. But i sure wish that you (generalized "you") would at least "dish it out" on topic.

Yeah more or less.

For the record I have no problem with trolls. I do have a problem with people who can gang rape a thread and then call the OP the troll. Their lack of self awareness annoys me.

If you want to troll a thread, turn it into off topic snipes, whatever, go for it. But accept it. You're not "feeding a troll" you are the one trolling.

Accept the fact that you're a troll or gtfo and stop trolling. It's as simple as that.

Seriously, if they are good at it, it is fun to watch people make fools of themselves. It is especially fun if they are extra crazy.

Agreed. Haven't been on here posting for long but when I scanned here before I noticed the same thing to what I saw as pretty innocent thread starters. It would be good to see slightly more pro-active moderation because this stuff must surely turn off people asking questions.

I disagree with this view because people in all walks of life are partisan which surely doesn't qualify them as trolls. Some posters tend to label others that disagree with them. Might be wrong but I think Hippie posted a thread before relating conservativism with some sort of cognitive deficiency. Also its a bit strong to say its a pathology to repeatedly react to other possibly trollish posters. Could be just an over sensitive ego, some sort of animosity with certain posters, a desire to silence some viewpoints and so on. Really I think people need to have a good sense of humour posting on pretty much any forum to avoid getting into scrapes and just to enjoy the experience! [;)]
