I've always made this joke to nilla friends - "You know how tired you are when you finish a marathon sex session? I'm that tired when I finish with the preliminary torture. I don't need to go to the gym." Seems to me your Master just needs some dependable workouts. Hope you heal quickly

I can relate very well to this type of injury. I am five feet tall, and though I am much stronger than I look, relatively speaking, I do not have that much upper body strength. A scene such as the OP described would not just have my arm sore, but my back as well.

First and most important suggestion: make sure your dom is using absolutely correct technique, not just in swing but in stance. I have learned that a slight change in stance can save me hours of muscle pain.

A proper warm up of the ass is essential (unless you want to get leather butt, in which case your dom does need to get himself to the gym).

Some subs love the massaging quality of the thud, and can't get enough. Has your dom tried florentine flogging? I think that would be a great way to "prepare" your ass for the cane.

A long florentine session with heavy, thuddy floggers will save his stamina b/c he will be using different muscles. It's also a great upper body workout.

Thank you for the suggestions, I didn't know that type of flogging was called Florentine, it's great to learn something new!

We do enjoy flogging, but we tend to do it mainly on my back. As you say, it is the perfect warm up (especially suede, nom nom) but we've always found it tricky to get the right position for flogging the ass - if you hit top to bottom then it is more the top of my ass which gets the warm up, rather than the lower 'cheek' part, which needs it more. Side to side and you get wrap-around. We tend to use leather and rubber paddles for a warm up, but in all honesty, we don't do a warm up that often. We have so many canes of varying thickness that Sir just tends to work his way up and down as he prefers. Thuddy canes if he's feeling nice, stingy canes if he's not. I will suggest a warm up to him, I'm certainly not opposed to it ;-)

Just on the subject of florentine flogging, Sir has some awesome ball-handled floggers (some call them poi floggers) that are perfect for doing that with. He does a manual job so he's pretty well developed on his upper body, I just think the muscles being used when caning are not ones that get a lot of use in real life. It could well be his stance, we're kind of cramped in the bedroom, it might be worth pulling out the spanking bench and making sure we use it in future, if it will save him some arm ache.

I think "thick cane" is the operative phrase here.

The larger canes can place tremendous stress on wrist, elbow, and shoulder. It isn't unusual for some people to develop "cane elbow" and have some pain for more than a month. This isn't caused by the buildup of lactic acid but of stress to the muscles.

Going to the gym doesn't help with the problem because the normal muscles exercised at the gym aren't the ones that are stressed by long heavy canes.

So things to try include:

use canes that are shorter, lighter, thinner;

if the shoulder hurts try a different stance where the force of the blows comes only from muscles in the wrist and the natural flex of the cane. Try holding the upper arm against the body so the elbow is touching the lower part of the rib cage. This stance insures that muscles in the shoulder and elbow won't be used.

have the Dom practice so many strokes a day to gradually build strength and flexibility for the exact muscles used ("going to the dungeon" instead of the gym).

have the Dom "choke up" on the cane to shorten it and stand closer to the sub

try an elastic wrist or elbow (or both) brace

if none of these work well for really heavy blows that both Dom and sub want, try forgetting normal "English" style caning and go to the Singapore penal style that uses both hands on a really really big cane.

The post-play problems can really be a drag. Having the Dom say to the sub "This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you" rather takes the fun out of the whole thing!
