Its called an "intervention". Do you bring up your beliefs that they are in disagreement with? Think hard about that. It doesnt have to be religious.

Now, you can do what I had to do. Tell them the next time they start in on religion, you are leaving, then proceed to do so. If that fails, quit inviting them. Im sure the arguments about their beliefs arent enjoyable to them either.

I never mention religion at all unless aomeone else does first. I tend to simply ignore it as long as it isn't shoved too hard in my face. I've found this works with the vast majority of believers but there are some, unfortunately including some of my relatives, who simply cannot conceive of anyone disagreeing with them.

With those people no amount of politeness or avoidance does the trick. Pretty much the only thing that does work is tearing their beliefs apart and showing it for the silly crap that it is. So far that has finally gotten me about 2 years of peace at family functions.

I asked about other than religion. I have a brother who thinks drugs should be legalized. Another who believes survival of the fittest should be our national motto. Talk about arguments! I make it a point not to push their buttons, and they make it a point not to push mine. Otherwise, we dont see each other for years.

You cant avoid them? Hell, I can avoid alot of people unless they are signing my payckeck.

I do tend to find many who are not religious also look for reasons to have such arguments with those who are religious just for that "superior" feeling.

Have we met the same people? Or are there just THAT many of them?

It is amazing how many times a day I do not feel the need to bring up my belief that there is no g*d. I figure that I am either content in my belief and there is no need to discuss it or I am not and so I have to prove it to myself and others.

LOL... a guy I worked with loved to have political discussions with me, and sometimes we would pull other co-workers into the discussions. We never yelled, never had arguments, often agreed to disagree.... and yet, even with all the discussions about religion as it tied into politics, none of us made our personal beliefs known.

It can be done!

I could avoid them by never seeing most of my relatives. For instance my uncle who I greatly enjoy spending time with, and spend as much as I can with as he is approaching 80, means I have to encounter his wife who believes that converting me to her faith is her lifes work.

I disagree with that. I was brought up catholic, attended catholic school. I no longer attend, my parents do. I feel no need to vent.

It's good that you feel that way, but plenty don't.

While it's true that some post to vent about their miserable childhoods (no matter what the source of that misery might be)...

there's also some who are just arrogant and like to throw stones at other people's houses. Whether it's pro-christian, anti-christian, pro-pagan, pro-atheist, pro-satanic, blah blah blah.

"We're so intellectually superior because we don't believe what you/they believe."

Yes, clearly, that makes them better people. Same arrogance, same intellectual dishonesty, different crap on their toilet paper of life.

Would that be at all like your arrogance and feeling of intellectual superiority while you stand on your soapbox and scold everyone?

Are you saying that to explain what "rulemylife"s mindset was (they were inferring the latter attitude in what I said), or are you projecting that onto me?

Just because others might infer X from something I said, doesn't mean that I implied it. I didn't say I'm superior to those who throw stones just to throw stones. Nor did I say, anywhere, that I never engage in that behavior either. I was just pointing out that the problem is not limited to people who were scarred by religious indoctrination in their past.

Am I better than those stone-throwers? nope. My shit stinks too. Everyone's does.

I am curious how believers reconcile such impossibilities?

Cognitive dissonance.

Here's a fresh look at the issue:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=trains-nukes-marriage-and-vaccines-2011-04-22

Edited to add: please don't think I am pointing fingers unfairly. It's something we all do. It's arguable that human beings can't make sense of a world full of contradictions with resorting to cognitive dissonance sooner or later. Of course it can be observed that some perspectives rely on cognitive dissonance much more than others. IMHO Biblical literalists fall into this last group.
