Royal Wedding Drawing a Big Yawn From Many Americans...

And I'm sure the rest of the world gives less than a shit about the president's dog, or what soup is being served in the white house today.

At least a royal wedding is something of reasonable significance to the country.

You must have notice football season.

At least we dont kill the fans at the big game - like the UK/EU crowd does.  lol.

It's two morons getting married.

Ground-breaking news.

Don't forget the bank holiday I'll be getting!

I just have to think of what to do with it. Can't really go anywhere because they'll be transport problems. Can't really watch TV because it'll be full of crap. Might just tend to the garden, see if anything is still living out there since my last assignation attempt.

Eh, not really relevant to the US, so I tend not to care. However, I will say that I wish them good luck, they both seem like good people.

I hear the queen is wanted for 'war crimes'. Made me laugh to know that the international buzzwords of diplomacy have found their way to the Real IRA.

So it should. They're no more than two people getting married, not even from your country. But, come on, Pahunk: 28% of Americans following it very closely or closely? That's an enormous amount of people from a foreign country following it closely. Like it or not, there is something about English traditions that a lot of people around the world seem to like, including in the US.

I personally would rather there were no monarchy. Nothing against them as individuals, though.

Edited to add: and you would be surprised at the number of people here who couldn't care less about the monarchy. I'd wager that there are a significant number of Americans, Japanese nd Germans outside the place where the wedding is taking place. There are usually more of these types than English hanging around outside royal residences.

Don't forget they are good for tourism (I hear) and we can sell loads of Royal crap with the union flag on. I'm just sitting here thinking of the next household item that doesn't have a Union flag on that could have.....because if I crack this it'll be like inventing the paperclip all over again.

Didn't they get married already?
Oh sure, I want to watch some wedding where I don't know the people involved, have never met them, and never will meet them and probably wouldn't like them if I did.

call me a hopeless romantic but I watch strangers getting married all the time.

If I'm walking by a church and I see everyone walking out, celebrating the unity of two people so joyously in love, I stop and watch and smile for their happiness.

It's contagious and to see people being happy instead of violent, angry and bitter is the best feeling in the world..whether I know them or not.

windchymes -> RE: Royal Wedding Drawing a Big Yawn From Many Americans... (4/25/2011 3:43:45 PM)

I have to say, not that I care that much, but it is nice to see them on the covers of magazines holding each other like they really love each other, and not all hoity and toity like Will's parents were.

tj444 -> RE: Royal Wedding Drawing a Big Yawn From Many Americans... (4/25/2011 4:00:05 PM)

I do think they are in love, unlike his parents. I think Diana was young, naive and lied to, imo.

I read that they have been living together for quite some time so she should have a good idea of what she is in for.

I wonder when baby #1 is scheduled to arrive, bet its a year from now...

I dont have a tv so I cant watch it live. I will just have to wait for the snippets & pics that are posted online. I want to see her wedding dress..

Big yawn from me, too, despite being a Brit. But, come the day, and before it even happens, the mass media here will write us non-royalists out of existence. They'll talk as though everyone in the country is 'united in joy', etc, etc, etc. *Sigh*. Seen this old bollocks many times before, don't doubt I'll see it many more times in the future.

Some good replies here.

I seen a comment on TV- that the UK monarch outlasted others in EU- as it had been more flexable.

I do think to a large extent they are figure heads.

The strings are pulled from behind the curtain.

I personally would hate for the prez to visit my town.  To not get to my own home would be bad.

From what I understand, they are figureheads and have no real authority. However, I do understand that they have a certain level of influence in the political system.

IS it on Friday?  Because Saturday is a big breast cancer walk in DC.

socio -> RE: Royal Wedding Drawing a Big Yawn From Many Americans... (5/2/2011 8:44:03 AM)

If their really in love then all the best to them but other then that the whole phenomena is bewildering to me. I'm a 20 something American so royalty means nothing to me but it is interesting to see how the english respond to it.

It's an interesting comment on society that if they were a poor alabama couple people would give less then a shit but as defunct royalty it seems many have gone mad for it. Princess fantasies or pure looky lue behavior I'm not sure.
