Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon

I have been trying to find one particular song since I first read this post this morning,
but try as I might, none of the songs listed match what's playing in my head.
The chorus to the song I can't shake is "What are we fighting for" It's almost
more of a chant than a song. None of the songs on You Tube are it. Blah!

I'll keep peeking in here in case someone comes along and posts it.
Great thread!

Thanks Ron. But the one I have in mind repeats "What are we fighting for"
over and over again. And its a little more modern sounding.

The Kinks and Ray Davies were as good as anyone from '66 onward about social commentary that was both sarcastic and sympathetic enough to be considered 'protest.'  Autumn Almanac a funny one there:

I like the part where his street is calling him back home and the background vocals sing the part of the street; 'come on home ... come on home ... '

No, but it is another great protest song.
Just you watch! I'll wake up in the middle of the night with the name of the song.

What a wonderful thread HK!!!

Here is my all time favorite protest song by Gil Scott Heron.

It is a spin off on my signature line, cause these days most of the revolution WILL be televised.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised/Gil Scott Heron

POWER TO THE PEOPLE, DAMN IT!

I already posted it, sweetie. But it bears repeating... a very powerful song poem.

Might it have been this one by Tyrone Wells?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMqv9_dZJ8Q

I don't know if it's the best, but this quiet little song had a lot of spirit. It was one of my favorites, back in the day.

Vietnam Will Win
by the Red Star Singers

There's no youtube, but the song can still be downloaded various places.

A far more popular song (I'd be surprised if hasn't already been listed here):

What Are We Fighting For lyrics

by Curt Smith

what are we fighting for
what am I trying to restore by taking aim at you
it's not that I need the best
I wnat you see I long to be successfully repressed
I don't know why we fall

what are we fighting for
why do I always ask for more than this day can provide
when did I loose your trust
why do I choose to justify this dirty little war
I don't know why we fall

there was a time when I believed in providence
where is that confidence now
I see the world sideways and I'm falling off again
into our rarely-go-round

what am I waiting for
isn't this where we fade to blackas you walk out the door
if I'm so damn sure
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/curt-smith-lyrics/what-are-we-fighting-for-lyrics.html ]
what are these tears I try to cheerfully ignore

there was a time when I believed in providence
where is that confidence now
I see the world sideways and I'm falling off again
into our rarely-go-round
there was a time when I thought our salvation lied
in the night's intimate heat
my anger's contagious my wishes outrageous
but dreams are my only relief

I'm revolving, gravity keeps calling
falling, into our rarely-go-round
into our rarely-go-round
into our rarely-go-round

(what are we fighting for)
when all the anger's gone
who's lost and has won
and dare we ask ourselves
who are we fighting

Is that it?
