i am not religious, but i do believe in a soul. to me it is that spark that makes you you. what makes you different from all others. i believe it vanishes upon death. to me there is no next world or afterlife. just oblivion.

so what's it like to you, what is the afterlife to you?

I believe in reincarnation. You are reborn into this world in a form based on your performance in your previous life.

I don't believe in heaven and hell in the commonly held manner. I do believe in reincarnation, perhaps slightly differently than some people believe but also similar, I am sure.

... Heaven for climate, hell for society.

No, but really, I don't hold any particular belief about what comes after I die. I'm afraid to think about it. -Terrified- because I hope I'll be judged for the things I've done wrong. I hope I'll be judged, and I know that if I am, I'm fucked. (Sick, isn't it?)

Really, I'd like reincarnation. I'd also like a chance to play god with some other solar system in the universe. I don't think either are likely, but I can dream.

As i understand it reincarnation is a hamster wheel of repeated lives and the goal is to reach Nirvana which is freedom from suffering. So, if you reach Nirvana and are free of suffering you must BE something. Sorta like "I think therefore I am." You are free from suffering and you am. But are you dead or alive in some form? Death as annihilation is one kind of freedom from suffering. My question is what are you in your philosophy or where are you at the point when you reach Nirvana?

Oh oh! I'd never really thought about that. I guess I just assumed it went on and on, with no particular goal, other than to have a good life. But I don't see living as suffering, so there really isn't a need to be released from it. Living is its own reward.

I do not believe there is an afterlife in the conventional sense. When you die in this world you are merely born in the next one. Each and every one of us has always been alive and will always be alive. At the end of each life one begins the next in another form in another universe or dimension, under different laws of physics and chemistry and such. We have each lived innumerable lives in innumerable forms, and this will continue into infinity.

As to what happens to your “soul”, well this is a rather complicated question, as it depends on what part of your soul you are talking about. Your soul is made up of five distinct aspects or selves. Each “Self” has its own fate when you die. These Selves are:

1) Personal Self. This is you. This is the part that has always existed and is immortal. This is what lives on in the next plane. In each of your lives you are you, within the constraints of the life form you are clothed in for that particular life. This part of you grows and evolves as you live, it learns and adapts over each life.

2) Spiritual Self. This is the animating aspect of your soul, it is what makes you alive. Upon death it vanishes, dissipating into nothingness, to be replaced with a new spiritual self in the next life.

3) Material Self. This is the aspect that is tied to this particular universe. When you die it is left behind in this world. It is this aspect that is the source of ghosts and other such phenomena.

4) Active Self. This is the echo of the sum total of your actions. Everything you do affects the cosmos as a whole, and creates a chain of cause and effect that will continue till the end of the universe. When you die, your Active Self merges into the physical universe and it is this that scientists call “dark matter.”

5) Mental Self. This is the sum total of all your thoughts. Every thought is a living thing that exists forever. They are merely borrowed from the pool of thoughts, and shaped by your mind into your own unique thoughts. When you die, your Mental Self resubmerges itself into this universal thought pool. This is what scientists call “dark energy.”

This what I have been taught, and what I believe.

Well that's certainly a different view of things. One that brings up many questions. The first that comes to mind is the thoughts. What do you mean by "shaped by your mind"? You make it sound like they are lumps of clay that are outside you in some way.

That reminds me of something I read once......wish I could remember where so I could get it right.

Someone asked when they would be enlightened and the reply was something like... One person says something like "Do I have to do it again? and they were told they would, until enlightenment. The other asked "When can I do it again?' and they were told they had achieved enlightenment.

I probably mutilated it beyond belief but the concept is there.

when you die you are dead, finished,it's over, all gone, done and dusted.
It is up to you how you behave when you are alive,no higher power is going to judge you when your life finishes and you won't be reincarnated as something horrible.
You have to live in this life because there is no other

You need to get a television show. People who like to issue definitive pronoucements about things they can't possibly know are very popular on Sunday mornings.

What is a soul? Is it a pattern of energy alone… or does the energy need a material container for paths of movement and stimuli?

We know absolutely what happens to the container after death but have no idea if the energy can continue to hold a pattern after the container ceases to function.

What happens to this energy… it can’t be destroyed by death. Does it just disperse into chaos or can it move or transcend into another form of awareness holding its pattern?

The deeper we delve into physics the more mysterious and magical the real world around us becomes. With each discovery the universe becomes more and more fantastic. It would be foolish to claim there is not the possibility of an existence we can not now see or understand.

Those who are closed minded about an after life or awareness fool themselves into thinking they are rational and logical and those that hold the possibility of a life after death are superstitious and less intelligent. This universe is too complicated to claim an absolute knowledge of anything.

I too have doubts as any rational mind should have but I hold out the possibility and even the hope that there is something…a God or another dimension…or a rebirth and transference of the pattern of life. I am the rational and logical one open to the mysteries of this universe without preconceived notions of life and death.

The lumps of clay analogy is misleading. Thoughts are merely energy that are given life by your thinking them. While you live they do as well. The energy itself is drawn from the universe, which it fills. Your mind draws the energy from around it and forms it into thoughts, which then take life, and live independent of you, yet tied to your Spiritual Self.  When that spark (your Spiritual Self) is extinguished, the life of your thoughts is as well and they return to the inanimate energy from which they came.

It is a difficult concept, and I am sure my explanation is inadequate to the task. I am not a qualified teacher.
