hardcybermaster -> a terrorist is dead,terrorism lives on (5/2/2011 4:48:44 PM)

so what now? Celebrate his death, I can't think of anyone who was more deserving of a bullet or two in the head but where does this leave us?
Safe and secure? I doubt it. Bin Lady has only been a figurehead for quite a few years now. Will this action scare wannabe terrorists? Maybe. Will it stop the radicalisation of young people by religous fanatics? Doubtful.
What happens when the leader or founder of a movement is assasinated? Does it vanish or grow stronger?
Killing Bin Lady does not address the issue of why there is terrorism in this world,it seems to me that if we spent as much time feeding and educating rather than killing and bombing then the world might be a better place.
Lots of questions,difficult answers....

You cant kill an idea. Of course terrorism will never die, not as long as there are humans on the planet.
My hope is that it will put a crimp in the organisational setup of any planned major attacks, but even that is hoping for more than stars.
Of course people will now use any future attempts as proof that Obama is a bad man for sending in the Seals.
funnymentalists of any stripe cant be trusted, unfortunately they cant be rounded up and shot, without thought police.
One thing this world is not short of is stark staring bonkers batshit people with access to weapons

This is an excellent point. For all the verbiage I've seen posted here about terrorism over my time posting on CM, very few people have taken the time to analyse what causes terrorism.

Like any other political phenomenon terrorism has identifiable causes, and occurs in specific situations. But rather than addressing these causes and situations, most politicians have jumped on board the bandwagon, proposing simple jingoistic solutions - usually military - that are inadequate. Thus we're caught up in never-ending struggles that seem to suit the terrorists.

Perhaps this moment will give pause to some people and they will reflect on what is a realistic successful strategy to counter terrorism.

servantforuse -> RE: a terrorist is dead,terrorism lives on (5/2/2011 5:34:10 PM)

Hate causes terrorism, and usually it is ignorant people who hate. It is the ignorant people who strap on bombs to kill innocent children at the directive of people like Bin Laden. He met his watterloo using his wife as a human shield. What a puke..

slvemike4u -> RE: a terrorist is dead,terrorism lives on (5/2/2011 5:40:02 PM)

Ignorance breeds hate...it also engenders those who suffer from it to cling to unreasonable beliefs .For instance...ignorance is capable of leading folks to question someone's citizenship....despite a preponderance of evidence that would disabuse those less ignorant of such a notion [8|]
Just sayin.....I mean while we are discussing the propensity's of those who suffer from ignorance [8|]

I am alarmed over all the cheer leading-   well fucking GLOATING I am seeing on facebook.

This "war" will go on the rest of our life-  and I dont see how dancing in the streets makes us any better then the bad guys.

We are supposed to be the good guys- the example.

I feel naucois over what is to come.  God help us.

slaveluci -> RE: a terrorist is dead,terrorism lives on (5/2/2011 6:16:51 PM)

Amen, pahunkboy. I agree 1000% Violence and hatred and murder is A-OK as long as the target is someone "we" approve of. Ignorance, hatred and killing are no good no matter who's dishing it out. It's a sad situation and really shows what people are made of when they're dancing some ignorant victory dance over this..........luci

Osama wasn't ignorant. He was an anomally. He came from a wealthy family. I am one person that is very happy that those Navy Seals took him out right there. He is with the fishes.

Did the execution of patrick henry dampen the radicalism of the american revolutionaries?

9-11 Widow: Today Is Not a Day of Celebration for Me By: ActivistPost

Huffington Post When my husband was killed on the morning of 9/11, television stations around the world ran split-screen video. They showed the buildings still burning juxtaposed against young Arabs celebrating in the streets. That disturbing vision left me incredulous; it was forever emblazoned on my psyche. Ten years later, now fully awake in the bright sunlight of the day, when I contemplate the definition of victory for our country when it comes to the death of Osama bin Laden, I can only think about the damage that has been done.

I'd certainly agree that hate is a feature of terrorism but I don't think it causes terrorism. Someone has to be angry before they begin to hate. That hate has to fester for while before it finds an ideology that makes sense to it, and a target to blame its problems on. What makes them angry?

The people who flew the planes on 9/11 weren't ignorant. Ignorant people can't pilot jet liners can they? But they were angry and hateful.

Try having a think about the various locations in the world where terrorism originates.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. […] Is there no other way the world may live?

–Dwight David Eisenhower, “The Chance for Peace,” speech given to the American Society of Newspaper Editors, Apr. 16, 1953.

You have screwed up this quote and are missing the point.

Are you suggesting that we SHOULD have embraced Uncle Stalin and that this has nothing to do with the Korean War?

The man had been a fisking GENERAL in the military.

Perhaps you like Five-Year-Plans and Great Purges, but I am not so fond of them. You can continue being a supporter of Bulganin and Khrushchev if you like, I find them and Stalin, repellent.
