ORIGINAL: ResidentSadist Time Enough for Love Stranger in a Strange Land By Robert A Heinlein Both are epic novels with poly protagonists giving great insight on what it means to be human. My fav quote is a placeholder at kaloneric.com: A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. -Lazarus Long (a fictional character from novelist Robert A. Heinlein - Time Enough for Love) more quotes here I'd be terrified to see these made into movies. Look at the atrocity that is Starship Troopers. I feel bad about what they did to Starship Troopers too. They even made sequels . . . ack. So you're saying that Casper Van Dien and Michael Ironside's experience in other B movies didn't help their worthless acting and not even a lesbian sex scene between Denise Richards and Dina Meyer could have saved the film? Ok... point taken about Starship Troopers. However, Starship Troopers was not one of Robert A Heinlein's milestone works. It was about the distant future and Earth was at war with a race of giant alien insects. That's B movie plot fodder. I admit that Stranger in a Strange Land could swing either way depending how it was handled. But Time Enough for Love is another matter entirely. Even a mediocre in the part of Lazarus Long would make it an epic movie because the plot and life perspectives are so good. Stranger in a Strange Land is the saga of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who came to Earth as an adult after being raised by Martians as a child (on Mars). It's about his interaction with and perspectives on Earthlings, our culture and his personal growth. He arrives on our planet with psi powers - telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others - and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate-father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a messiah figure. His introduction into Earth society, together with his exceptional abilities, lead Valentine to become many things to many people: freak, scam artist, media commodity, searcher, free-love pioneer, neon evangelist, and martyr. The novel has never been out of print and he won a Hugo Award for it. It's called Heinlein’s earthly “divine comedy.” Time Enough for Love was nominated for the Nebula Award, the Hugo and Locus Awards. The book is about the life of Lazarus Long, the oldest living human who is two thousand years old. He recounts his life to attendants who are charged with inspiring him not to execute his right to die. Lazarus is convinced to dictate the story of his life. So we flashback through dozens of tails packed with drama, adventure, romance, war, politics and power. He finds that while he has lived and loved more than most, there are still things that he'd like to experience.
